The warrant was for something else. Ohio's Attorney General has said there was no expectation that any children were inside that home. The school district had no record. The neighbors had no idea. Investigators believe the family had moved across more than one Ohio county while generating almost none of the ordinary paperwork the rest of us leave behind. And the oldest of the sixteen, an eighteen-year-old, could not write her own name, according to investigators. Ohio has that name. The state issued her a birth certificate the year she was born and put it in a county drawer, where it has sat untouched while the young woman it belongs to grew up in that house.
