China's test launch of a long-range ballistic missile in the South Pacific has drawn condemnation from Australia and regional partners, despite Beijing describing it as routine training. The JL-2 submarine-launched missile, with a 9,000 kilometre range capable of reaching all of mainland Australia, occurred hours after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese signed a new defence deal with Fiji. Defence and foreign policy expert Peter Tesch characterises the test as a destabilising move and strategic messaging aimed at the region and the United States, part of China's broader strategy to establish a sphere of deference in the Pacific.
