episode COVID outbreak and it's affect on music artwork
COVID outbreak and it's affect on music

Thoughts and Observations about COVID outbreak and it’s affect on music Before this shutdown, I was rigorously preparing my hands for a north-american / CA tour. In fact, I think I would have left about tomorrow, to take a plane to NY. When the borders were closed, and european travel was banned, every single show and tour was sequentially postponed or cancelled. Honestly, it’s hard to say whether this tour, or any other was entirely cancelled or not, because upon opening their doors, venues are going to have a lot to re-negotiate with promoters and booking agents. So, since performance industry is a large monetary source for almost every touring and performing artist, it’s the equivelent to being laid off. Many musicians make their living this way, and as other fellow americans have been put out of work by the virus, so too have we. Despite this, there are parts of the musical community that are thriving during this crisis. Podcast Episode Billboard has it’s own Covid Quarantine live-stream referral page, for mainstream pop artists, everyone from metallica to coldplay to miley cirus, promoting content during the shutdown. There are also a number of industries that are obviously taking advantage of the situation. From studio plug-in manufacturers “stay at home and create music” to Fender guitars offering online lessons. The music school / corporation I teach out of, as an example, has been doing various types of masterclasses every week, live-streamed from remote locations, and bringing in guest artists who are inevitably in the same situation as the rest of musicians. I myself have been offering online lessons and teaching people in different remote locations, as I do anyways in normal times. Outside of the main stream industrialized music, there are tons of music releases, collaborations, quarantine titled creative projects, and artistic endeavors popping up on social media outlets. A quick search with keywords relating to the virus and music specifically will reveal tons of content. Many bands and artists that I know personally are suddenly live-streaming performances of their sets un-filtered from their jam spaces. I also received an offer yesterday to do some live stream performances with a band I play with, and will probably take it up. Live-streaming is a fantastic way to reach people in times like this. And almost everyone is trying to make use of the technology. But there is a flip-side to it as well. [https://i1.wp.com/www.adonfanion.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/ShowNoGo.jpg?fit=980%2C891&ssl=1] Firstly, it begs the question “why were we not live-streaming our content already?”. Does it really take a global crisis to get people to take this step? Typically, live-streams are a pretty rare endeavor for most bands. Now that this is the only option, and everyone is doing it, I notice that the market is somewhat over-saturated with live streams, as there are so many happening on the regular. Sometimes it seems like the engagement is not as high as it would typically be. I also wonder if this has anything to do with the algorithms of social media platforms favoring the abundant fear-driven headlines about death tolls and contagions, or political spins on the whole thing. But fear is the enemy of creative output, usually, and this has been a deeply creative and cathartic time for many artists. I myself have thus far collaborated on four different projects over the last two weeks, and many with people across continents. What else does a musician have to do when you’re at home with your instruments all day long? There was also a notable statistical upsurge in streaming music, followed by a steep downturn.[4] [https://www.musicbusinessworldwide.com/global-spotify-chart-streams-rose-3-last-week-but-fell-again-in-the-united-states/][3] [https://spotifycharts.com] Streaming services are finding that the usage changes significantly, as one would expect, when people aren’t in their 9 to 5 schedules. Furthermore, areas that are on lockdown tend to have lower rates of streaming in general, perhaps because people are forced to spend time with their family during this time. It’s speculated that after this period, there will be a mad rush to rebook everything that was postponed or cancelled earlier in the year, which will inevitably lead to a wealth of live-shows and performances for touring artists, myself included. Hopefully everyone will recoup their costs too, as I imagine that like myself, many people are eager to get out and watch real shows again. Live-stream performances will become cheap and lose their novelty in a matter of weeks. Musicians eagerly wait to play and perform again, and most non musicians eagerly await their freedom of social interaction. But until then, the best way to support fellow artists in my opinion is to watch and share their creations. A direct fan to artist connection allows creators to do what they want to do, which is share art with other people. Although I’ve seen some people dispassionate about artists trying to take advantage of this situation, it really is the only option for someone who creates for other people and is stuck at home like everyone else. Spare the moral judgement, the sole reason to make art is to honor the universe and share it with other people. So, find those artists whom you enjoy, and go to them directly to receive their art, that’s my opinion. In any case, nobody has seen anything like this before, and all of humanity is forced into an slightly different way of interaction. Music and arts might take a backseat for a while, but if you enjoy them and want to support them, it’s still just as possible as ever. Bands and musical artists are funding their operations through online sales, merch deals, and direct-support. At the very least, if you’re participating in these live-streams and engagements with artists, it gives them a platform to reach fans through the chaos of headlines, and I believe that it’s more important and conducive to sanity to engage with art than amygdala hyperstimuli. If you enjoyed this piece, feel free to subscribe to the podcast and shoot me an email and let me know your thoughts. I would also love to hear from you about any perspective you have on the matter when it comes to the creative arts, and if you have seen any pieces that were written during this time period, I’m inclined to share them in a collage of Covid Creations too. Until then, stay safe. Bliss On Mushrooms (Cover feat. Matan Shmuely)

I’m very grateful to have been able to do this cover and have my incredible brother from Israel Matan Shmuely perform on the beginning section. A full length cover of the song Bliss On Mushrooms by Infected Mushroom. This was a lot of fun to record, and I learned a lot during the process. I am also very grateful to have had Matan’s masterful drumming on the beginning section. It really brought the piece together. Infected Mushroom is my favorite Electronic Music duo, and their production is something to aspire to. So in covering this song, I tried to learn as much as possible about their approach to making the music they make. Everything from the layers and instruments, to the production and recording. I tried to use as many real instruments as possible, including some bells that I sampled from the neighbor’s yard in January. I’m very grateful to have been able to do this cover and have my incredible brother from Israel Matan Shmuely perform on the beginning section. The post Bliss On Mushrooms (Cover feat. Original Song - 4 Pillars

Here is a song that I’ve been working on for a while now. I have a full music video almost scripted for it, but I have to wait until monsoon season to get the footage. The song is called 4 Pillars, and soon I’ll hopefully be able to release a version with real drums! If you subscribe to the podcast, you already have this MP3… Otherwise, you can download it for your own price on the products page. episode Why I left Ghost Ship Octavius artwork
Why I left Ghost Ship Octavius

So, Today is the day that my departure from GSO is announced. With them, and over the last seven years, I had some of the most memorable experiences of my life. I’ve made friends with great human beings all over the world. I’ve had the blessing of being able to create and share art with diverse audiences abroad, some happ y to hear it, and some unhappy to hear it. The podcast / audio recording of my explanation for leaving GSOI’ve been truly blessed to have made friends with so many amazing people, musicians and non-musicans alike, and live such an enriching experience. None of that would have been possible if it were not for my joining GSO when I was seventeen. But the reason I left is simple. I had been feeling creatively unfulfilled for a very long time, and it’s entirely my fault for many reasons. The attachment to all of the aforementioned gratitudes allowed me to continue unhappy with my own creative expression, and if you are an artist you probably understand what that feels like. For what do I create if it’s not fulfilling? I have so much I’d like to make and share with everyone, but I couldn’t make it or share it. I felt really terrible, but assured myself that it’s all worth it to continue this way, because experience…. I could not continue this way; moreover, friends and family with whom I confided in acknowledged my lack of potentiality and would often assume this realization on my behalf to some degree without my provocation or slightest hint that I felt unfulfilled. I mean: I didn’t even have to say anything about it. Since I’ve been unofficially out of GSO, I’ve been writing a lot, and producing a lot of music and art. I’d like to share a piece with you. And if I’m lucky, Van from Ghost Ship will play drums on it, and I can release that version. Until then, here is a work in progress called 4 Pillars.
