Though under house arrest for two years (Acts 28:22–31), Paul proclaims Christ and the kingdom “with all boldness and without hindrance.” Luke deliberately leaves Acts open‑ended (for example, there is no reference to Paul's final trial and execution) to show that the mission to the ends of the earth is 'unfinished business' and we today must imitate the Apostle in his unavoidable commitment to preach the gospel to all. This commitment is demonstrated in our passage as Paul meets with Jewish leaders in Rome, systematically proves that Jesus is the Christ from the Law and the Prophets, and explains that because many Jews reject the message, God’s salvation is now going to the Gentiles.

The outcome of the Council of Jerusalem was to vindicate totally the gospel that Paul preached among the Gentiles. Believers in Christ, whether Jew or Gentile, are justified by their faith and neither the requirements nor the provisions of the old covenant apply to them. Circumcision and “the law of Moses” have no place in the scheme of salvation, except as pictures of the spiritual truth revealed in Christ. Paul and the leaders of the Jerusalem church agreed to a division of work; Paul was to evangelize the Gentiles and they the Jews. This agreement, however, was no parting of the ways. It was based upon a common gospel, fellowship in Christ, and mutual respect.

Episode 269: AUDIO; THE BIBLE ON TRIAL, THE COUNCIL OF JERUSALEM (Gal. 6)

We gather with Paul at he Council of Jerusalem as he confronts his Judaizing opponents, who sought to bind Gentile believers to the Mosaic covenant. (Galatians 2:3-5, Chapter 6 of "Free in Christ"). The Apostle contends powerfully that adding circumcision and works to the gospel of free grace threatens the new covenant and the doctrine of salvation by faith alone. He uses his Gentile companion Titus as living proof that believers are accepted for their faith in Christ without submitting to the law of Moses.
