Earl Nightingale explains that money is like a harvest we get back for the work and service we provide to others. If you want to earn more money, you have to find ways to be more helpful and provide more value. A brain surgeon makes more than an elevator operator because their skill is much harder to replace and took more time to learn. To grow your income, you must focus on building your skills so that you can give more to the world every single day. ✎ Most people want to be rich but they never stop to pick a real goal or a specific number. You should decide on three things: how much you want to earn each year, how much you want to save, and how much you need for when you stop working. Write these goals on a card and carry it with you so you have a map for your future. Albert Schweitzer and Horace Latimer taught that money is a great servant but it should never become your master. When you set clear goals and have faith in yourself, you move into the top five percent of people who take control of their own lives. ✎ The world pays you for what you earn through service and not just what you wish for in your head. Goethe said that you must be something before you can do something. This follows the law of cause and effect where your rewards will always match the amount of help you give to others. If you are not happy with your pay, you must find new ways to use your mind and energy to bridge the gap. Do not try to get something for nothing because that plan never works for anyone. This is a warning to every ambitious person out there who is afraid of making a mistake. You might feel like you have to take the safe job or follow the crowd, but that is how you end up with a life full of regret. I had to choose between a big banking job and a startup making only 300 dollars a month. I picked the startup because I did not want to be 40 years old wondering what could have been. You have to decide if you want to fail on your own terms or succeed on someone else's plan. ✎ If you want to win, you have to turn your pain into your purpose. I felt like a failure when I was 19 and wanted to quit, but I stayed in the game and studied mentors like Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, and Steve Jobs. Your struggles are just training for your future. I keep a bag of Doritos on my desk that I never eat just to prove to myself that I am stronger than my temptations. Whether it is building a business or waking up early, you build self-belief by doing hard things on purpose every single day. ✎ Success does not happen overnight and you are not behind. It took me five years to get just 2,000 subscribers on YouTube, but now Believe Nation has millions of people. You have to be patient and keep planting seeds even when you do not see the growth yet. Stop trying to do everything alone like I did at first. Find a mentor, join a group, and surround yourself with people who lift you up.
