A Covenant in the Clouds | Genesis 9:8-17

This week we will be looking at Genesis 9:8–17, where God establishes His covenant with Noah after the flood—a promise not merely to preserve creation, but to advance His plan of redemption. This passage explores what a covenant is and why it’s important to understanding our Bible. We will see that even though humanity remains sinful even after the flood, God pledges never again to destroy the earth with water. This covenant reveals both God’s justice toward sin and His commitment to sustain history so that His saving purposes in Christ might unfold. God not only speaks this promise but gives a visible sign—the rainbow in the clouds—which serves as a gracious reminder of His mercy. Yet, the rainbow is not merely a sentimental symbol, it testifies that God remembers His covenant and continues to show patience toward a sinful world. And importantly, the rainbow points beyond itself to a greater covenant reality: Jesus Christ, who now reigns at the right hand of the Father and intercedes for His people by His once-for-all sacrifice. I look forward to gathering together this Sunday to hear God’s Word, worship Christ our covenant-keeping Lord, and to be reminded again that His mercy still stands for all who come to Him in faith. In the Beginning...Again (Part 2)

This Sunday we will continue our series through Genesis, “In the Beginning…Again (Part 2)” from Genesis 9:1–7. After the flood, Noah steps into a world that has passed through judgment and into a new beginning. But an important question remains: How do you rebuild life in a broken world? Before cities, governments, and institutions, God begins with worship, calendars, families, dominion, and justice. Building off last week, Genesis 9 gives us God’s blueprint for life on the other side of judgment—and it turns out to be the very world we still inhabit today. Together we will see how God calls humanity to be fruitful, steward His creation, and protect human life as image bearers. Most importantly, we’ll see how all of this points us to Christ—the greater Noah and true Adam—who entered judgment on our behalf to make all things new. As broken as our world is, Christ has not abandoned it. He gathers His people for worship and sends them back out into the world to live faithfully for His glory. Sermon In the Beginning...Again (Part 2) Genesis 9:1-7 I. Children: The Brick of Legacy (9:1, 7) a. Parents: disciple your children b. Evangelize your children c. Church: invest in the next generation II. Dominion: The Brick of Stewardship (9:2–4) III. Justice: The Brick of Protection (9:5–6) Theology in Application: I. Gathered for Worship, Sent for Work
