My name is James Rogers. Five years ago, when I found myself in the mental hospital everyone greeted me with the question, “what are you in here for?” So that’s the question I present to my guest. What is your story and how did you transform your pain into purpose? Give a Shift podcast is a place for storytellers to inspire and uplift others on their journey from victim to hero.

016. Verbatum Jones: Not Praying For Likes But Living An Authentic Spiritual Life

Spirituality has become a trend. Consciousness and awareness are the new buzz words. But what does it mean to have faith? Who is God and how do we access her or him? We are brought up to believe God is judgemental. Images show us a white man sitting in the sky, condemning us to heaven or hell. Verbatum Jones isn’t here for any of this nonsense. He was raised with a deep spiritual background and came to connect with God on his own terms. He started preaching at a young age but when he stopped cutting his hair and started growing dreads he was kicked out of his church. But all of the struggles and hardships only strengthened his faith. Verb still preaches but not in the church anymore. He spreads the light through his raps and shares his vulnerability with his rhymes. Topics Discussed in this Episode: How to connect with God Staying true to who you are while creating music Getting kicked out of his church How doubt and struggle strengthens our faith The pressure that religion can put on us Trying to be perfect in the eyes of God The ups and downs of being a rapper How to connect with James Instagram - Give A Shift Yoga IG Account- We The Shift Yoga Facebook - James Arthur Rogers III How to connect with Verb Instagram - Verb's IG Twitter - Verb Facebook - Verbatum Jones Soundcloud - Listen Here! 015. Gurumittar Khalsa: How To Stay Open and Keep The Chi Flowing

Sometimes, life can be difficult and intense. Especially in these times of major shifts. We are currently in mercury retrograde and we are also beginning to shift into the winter season. The holidays are quickly approaching. It is time to go inward, which can be overwhelming and frightening. So how do we stay open? When all we want to do is shut down, eat a bag of chips, smoke some weed and drink a bottle of wine. There are so many ways to stay open. It looks different for all of us. Connection is huge. Call someone, talk to a friend, reach out to your auntie or uncle. Take a bath, meditate, get acupuncture, invest in yourself. And even when you find yourself closing off and making mistakes. Forgive yourself. Meet yourself with love. In this interview, Gurumittar and I talk about how to stay open when all that we want to do is curl up in a ball and give up. Gurumittar is an acupuncturist and third-generation yogi. She spent 10 years of her childhood life at Miri Piri Academy. A school where they would wake up at 5 in the morning to do yoga and meditation. We discuss what it’s like to grow up in a yogi family and how Gurumittar was able to find her path when she came back to the US. We get into the depths of chi, the importance of community and connecting with others. Topics Discussed in this Episode: What is chi? 014. Dr. Somer Nicole: How To Stay Grounded While Being A Healer

At some point in our lives, we all need help. We need somebody to lift us from the darkness and show us the light. We need a friend to believe in us when we have lost hope. When I was living on Kaua’i, Dr. Somer was the help I needed. I was stuck in my trauma and I was overwhelmed by my bipolar diagnosis. I found Somer at one of the lowest points in my life. She was my first Kundalini Yoga teacher and after class, she told me all about studying Kundalini in India with Gurmkuh. Six months later, I found myself in India, completing teacher training with Gurmukh. After taking a class with Somer, I learned that she was so much more than a teacher. Somer is a doctor of physical therapy, cranial-sacral therapist, somatic and emotional release and reiki energy healer. I began working with Somer to heal my old traumas and reconnect to my inner truth. During one of our sessions, I remember lying down on the table and suddenly my body jolted up into a seated position, I looked at her in the eyes and said, “I am not bipolar anymore. That was just a phase of my life.” It was over two years ago that I made that statement. Since then I have not had a manic or depressive episode. In this episode, you will get a taste of all that Somer has to offer. Her knowledge in the healing arts is profound. We talk about the importance of staying grounded as a healer. Somer teaches us about hypopressive breathing and low-pressure fitness. If you are a yoga teacher or healer of any kind this episode is a must. She talks about the benefits of uddiyana bandha, one of the three body locks in yoga. She even gets into how it took her two years to restore her gut health. This is an action-packed six-minute conversation where you gain a lot of knowledge. 013. Kevin Minogue: Ayahuasca is Not the Answer… Connecting With Your Inner Guide's Is The Way

Kevin Minogue is a shamanic counselor. Before that, he was a businessman, trading soybeans for big bucks. It took him three years of sickness to finally connect to his true calling. At first, he was resistant to make the big shift. But after writing his will and preparing for his final hour, he realized, “what the fuck am I doing.” In this conversation with Kevin, we don’t shy away from anything. We start with the simple question, “what is a shaman?” Most shaman’s these days cost big bucks and hand out Ayahuasca and other plant medicine like it is candy. Kevin isn’t afraid to call bullshit when he sees it. We also get into porn, masturbation, being in an open relationship, religion, childhood trauma and everything in between. This episode will have you captivated from beginning to end.
