COASTAL GEORGIA FISHING REPORT 4/18/14

TRIPLETAIL FISHING REPORT
I could go on for days about the weather, but I know you really want to hear about the fishing. This past weekend we mainly focused on Tripletail fishing [https://charterfish.com/tripletail-eddiefish-fishing-charters-st-simons-island/]. Word has definitely gotten out as there were probably 30 boats out there looking for Tripletail this weekend.
The fish were popping up pretty decent on Saturday and we were able to spot about 15, get 4 to eat, and only get one to the boat. A lot of boats came in complaining that the fish wouldn’t eat but that was not what we were dealing with. One reason may be that we stayed out of the pack. I talk more about this in the podcast so give it a listen.

GEORGIA SURF FISHING REPORT
The surf fishing apparently experienced an uptick as the fellas from South Georgia Surf Fishing were able to get some nice Bull Reds to the beach. You can check there report out below as well as a video from them. Follow them in Instagram by following this link [http://instagram.com/southgasurffishing].
> The fishing from the surf is starting to really come around. Redfish, sharks and whiting. The quantity of fish is not there yet but the quality is. If you can stick it out, you will be rewarded with some nice fish. We landed some very nice bull reds all over 40+ inches. Fresh cut bait (mullet and whiting) is doing the trick for catching the reds. Sharks are also here and are swimming near the beaches. Reports of sandbar, blacktip, bonnet head, lemon, scalloped hammerhead, and sand tiger sharks have all been caught from the surf over this past week. Bonita seems to be the hot bait right now for sharks. But if you can’t get your hands on any, cut mullet is always a good substitute. Whether your kayaking baits out or casting them you should be able to get on some nice sharks. Whiting are everywhere! If you need them for bait or just want some for fish tacos, there should be no problem catching any. All you need a is a piece of dead shrimp and a small hook.
Tip of the week:
Here’s a pretty simple tip but effective. No matter what your trying to catch, it’s always a good idea to keep fresh bait on your rods. Change baits every 30 min – 1 hour. This helps keep the scent strong, which increases your chances for that fish to find your bait. Also if you have a variety of bait and multiple rods, try each bait until you can determine which is working best.

In other news, the new site is up. I’m still working on the forum solution and I may even scrap the current platform and go with something more robust.

TRIPLETAIL FISHING IN GEORGIA HAS FINALLY KICKED OFF!
Tripletail Fishing Charter [https://charterfish.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/41014TT-300x298.png]That’s the biggest news in this week’s fishing podcast. There has been a lot of overall improvement in the fishing, but by far my favorite part of this week’s news is the arrival of the Tripletail.
The first fish to arrive are almost always the biggest that you will see for the season on average. The later it gets in the season, the more small fish you will see. It also seems that you will see less big fish. This year has been no different so far as the fish that are here right now look life surfboards.
They have been a bit spooky and hard to catch but there has been no shortage of opportunities. In this podcast I offer a tip for dealing with stubborn Tripletail by using a naked shrimp rig. It’s harder to cast and keep in the strike zone, which makes it a last resort option for me on charters. But for most anglers it can be a great idea as a primary rig.
BULL REDFISH ARE MOVING INSHORE
More great news in that the Redfish… Bull Redfish, are moving in on the bars as more and more baitfish show up. I am still catching a few offshore but not nearly as many which could be a result of the bulk of the fishing moving inland.
That’s good news for me as I rather stay close to land anyway if at all possible. Until Cobia show up, it would suit me to stick to the beaches and rivers.
TROUT FISHING IS IMPROVING
If you have been Trout fishing in the last couple of weeks you don’t need me to tell you that it hasn’t been easy. The fish have been wadded up tight in the backs of creeks for the most part and not widespread by any means.
This week the fish seemed to start moving out of their winter pattern and begin to move back into some shallower water. Our good friends the Yellow Tails made a showing this week as well so look forward to buying more bait when you go Trout fishing so the bait thieves don’t eat you out of house and home.
SEA BASS FISHING STILL GOOD, BUT NOT AS GOOD
The Sea Bass fishing is still pretty good as long as you’re going out a decent ways. Sticking around close to land isn’t going to get you much other than a long day of catching a trillion small Sea Bass. The further out you go the better the quality gets. The thing is, we’ve been doing that for a few weeks now and it seems that either we are picking off most of the big ones or they are finding somewhere that they like better.
GEORGIA FISHING TIP FOR THE WEEK
This week I talk about an alternative to speed jigs and a good all around bait to keep in your boat for anything from Amberjack to Tarpon. Hogy Eels can imitate baitfish or eels, they are east to work, and they are very diverse in how you can use them.
Here is a picture of my speed jig alternative rig:
