Syyskuussa 2001, alle kaksi viikkoa WTC-iskujen jälkeen, ohikulkija huomaa Thames-joessa, Lontoossa, ajelehtivan jotain sinne kuulumatonta. Kyseessä on noin 5-vuotiaan, tummaihoisen pojan paloiteltu ruumis. Silminnäkijöiden, rikospaikan ja sormenjälkien puuttuessa poliisilla ei juuri ole johtolankoja, mutta viranomaiset jatkavat sinnikkäästi työtään tieteilijöiden avustuksella ja pian asiat alkavat edetä. Tutkinta vie poliisin Skotlannin ja Saksan kautta ensin Etelä-Afrikkaan ja lopulta Nigeriaan synkkien perinteiden, uskomusten ja rituaalien maailmaan. Mitä “Adamiksi” nimetylle pojalle oli tapahtunut ja kuka hän oikeastaan edes oli?
