The horseback riders were garbed in uniforms that identified them as Daisyfield guards.                “Round them up,” an authoritative voice boomed through a full helm.                Several guards dismounted and marched toward the terrified impoverished. They were none to gentle as they began herding them into a group. Judging by the complaints, cries, and scuffles, the people were opposed to being herded… and were, understandably, frightened. “Just what in Althalos’ name do you think you are doing?” Kessa demanded in a voice that matched the authority and volume of the helmed man, but was also amply spiced with anger.                A guard, still on his horse and positioned close to her, swiveled his head to glare at her and his arm lifted as if he meant to strike.

Although Kessa might consider herself a bit of a social outcast, she certainly didn’t act like one at her sister’s celebration party. Nor was she treated like one. Thomas, like her sister, like Quinn, like everyone had forgotten her birthday. Big surprise! “I don’t think I’ll acknowledge my birthday again. Why should I celebrate the day I was born? No one else does...” she was about to continue but her voice caught in her throat. Blasted emotions!

What’s the popular saying for escaping one dangerous situation only to face a worse one? Out of the frying pan into the fire is certainly an apt idiom for the circumstances Kessa finds herself in upon waking up the morning after fleeing her kidnappers. The night’s rainstorm provided slippery footing as well. Those factors, in addition to the soreness the king’s beating afforded, affected her normally expeditious pace. Regrettably (for Kessa), the chase was now on a level playing field. Perhaps the odds were on the brothers’ side since she had no idea where she was either.
