Why Don't People Go To Church?

When we look around our sanctuaries on a Sunday morning, we often notice empty seats where friends and neighbors used to sit. It is natural to wonder why so many people choose to step away from the church. For some, the answer lies in deep, unhealed wounds. They have experienced harsh judgment in places where they expected unconditional love, leaving their spirits bruised and entirely unwelcome. Others simply feel overwhelmed by the frantic pace of life, viewing Sunday as their only chance to finally catch their breath. Still, others struggle with feeling completely disconnected, believing they do not quite fit into the community. It is easy to respond to their absence with quiet criticism, but Jesus asks us to respond with profound empathy.

So Much To Do And So Little Time To Do It

We stare at our daily schedules and feel a heavy weight pressing down on our shoulders. The list of tasks seems endless, while the hours in the day slip away far too quickly. We rush from one obligation to the next, trying to meet everyone's expectations and keep every plate spinning. This constant sprint leaves our bodies exhausted and our spirits completely depleted. When the urgent demands of life loudly compete for our attention, it feels impossible to simply catch our breath.

Some People Are Made For Conflict

We all encounter people who seem to thrive on disagreement. Whether it is a coworker who constantly stirs up drama or a family member who turns simple conversations into heated arguments, some individuals appear genuinely made for conflict. Their words can feel like sharp arrows, and interacting with them often leaves us completely drained. It is incredibly easy to become defensive, match their rising anger, or simply avoid them altogether. Yet, as followers of Christ, we are called to walk a profoundly different path. When the world pushes us to fight back, Jesus invites us to step into the difficult space of peacemaking.

The World Is Changing

We look around and see a world moving faster than we can often comprehend. Familiar landscapes shift constantly, new challenges emerge overnight, and the daily news brings fresh waves of uncertainty. When the ground beneath us constantly moves, it is incredibly easy to feel overwhelmed and anxious. We naturally try to find our footing in our careers, our routines, or our plans, only to realize these things can alter in a single instant. The heavy weight of an unpredictable future can quickly steal our peace and leave our hearts feeling completely unsettled.

I Want To Go To Heaven, Just Not Right Now

We often find ourselves caught in a beautiful tension between our earthly joys and our eternal hope. When we experience deep laughter with family, witness a stunning sunset, or celebrate a hard-won victory, we naturally want to hold onto those moments as long as possible. It is perfectly normal to deeply love the life God gave you while still believing that heaven will be infinitely better. The Apostle Paul felt this exact same pull. He recognized the profound peace of going home to be with Christ, yet he also understood the vital purpose of staying right where he was to serve others.
