Just relax and enjoy the podcast ==Japanese and English scripts== 私は、ヘイズという言葉をシンガポールに来てからよく聞くようになりました。 I started hearing the word “haze” quite often after I came to Singapore. 日本では、ニュースでヘイズという言葉をあまり聞きません。 In Japan, I do not hear the word “haze” in the news very often. もちろん、日本にヘイズのようなものがないということではありません。 Of course, this does not mean Japan does not have anything like haze. 日本にいた時は、ヘイズという言葉より、PM2.5や黄砂という言葉をニュースで聞くことが多かった気がします。 When I lived in Japan, I feel I heard words like PM2.5 and yellow sand in the news more often than haze. PM2.5は、空気の中にあるとても小さいものだそうです。 PM2.5 is very small particles in the air. 目には見えませんが、体にはあまりよくないものです。 We cannot see it with our eyes, but it is not very good for the body. 黄砂は、遠くから風で飛んでくる砂やほこりです。 Yellow sand is sand and dust that comes from far away by the wind. 日本では、PM2.5や黄砂のニュースが出ると、外に出る時は気をつけましょうと言われることがあります。 In Japan, when there is news about PM2.5 or yellow sand, people are sometimes told to be careful when going outside. マスクをした方がいいと言われることもあります。 Sometimes people are told that it is better to wear a mask. 特に黄砂は、目で見ても分かる時がありました。 Especially with yellow sand, there were times when I could see it with my own eyes. シンガポールでは、ヘイズという言葉でニュースになることがあります。 In Singapore, it is sometimes in the news as “haze”. シンガポールは車も多いです。 There are also many cars in Singapore. 個人的には、バスの後ろから出る黒い煙が少し気になります。 Personally, I sometimes notice the black smoke coming from the back of buses. それに、隣の国で畑を燃やしていることも、原因の一つです。 Also, burning fields in neighbouring countries is one of the causes. シンガポールで生活していると、時々、朝の空気が白く濁って見える日があります。 Living in Singapore, sometimes the morning air looks white and unclear. 最初に見た時、私は少しびっくりしました。 When I first saw it, I was a little surprised. 湿った霧のようなものではありません。 It is not like wet fog either. 煙で空が濁っているように見えます。 It looks like the sky is unclear because of smoke. 遠くの建物も、少し見えにくくなります。 Buildings far away also become a little difficult to see. 日本にいた時より、空気の違いが分かりやすい気がしました。 I felt that the difference in the air was easier to notice than when I lived in Japan. もちろん、自分ではどうすることもできません。 Of course, there is not much I can do by myself. だから、仕方ないんですが……。 So, it cannot really be helped, but… でも、空気が汚れているのを見るのは、あまりいい気持ちではありません。 But seeing that the air is dirty does not feel very good. 前にタイやベトナムへ行った時も、同じような感じでした When I went to Thailand and Vietnam before, it felt similar. ベトナムに住んでいる友達は、咳がずっと出ると言っていました。 A friend living in Vietnam said they kept coughing. 東南アジアは人も多いです。 Southeast Asia has many people. 町にも活気があります。 The cities are also full of energy. でも、その分、空気の問題も大きいのかもしれません。 But because of that, air problems may also be serious. 実際に行ってみて、そう感じました。 I felt that after actually going there. 難しいことは、正直よく分かりません。 To be honest, I do not really understand the difficult details. でも、これからもっとクリーンな技術ができるといいなと思います。 But I hope cleaner technology will develop in the future. そして、空気を守るための法律も、もっと整っていくといいですね。 And I hope laws to protect the air will also become better. 将来、今よりきれいな空気の中で生活できるようになったら、うれしいです。 I would be happy if we could live with cleaner air in the future.

Why do we buy so much? Snacks, clothes, cosmetics, limited-edition items… Sometimes shopping is not just about what we need. Just relax and enjoy the podcast ==Japanese and English scripts== みなさんは、物を買うことが好きですか。 Do you like buying things? 新しい服、新しいかばん、新しい靴を見ると、わくわくしますか。 Do you feel excited when you see new clothes, bags, or shoes? 私は、あまり物欲がありません。 I do not have a strong desire to buy things. 「これが欲しい」と強く思うことが、あまりありません。 I do not often strongly think, “I want this.” でも、シンガポールに住んでいると、少しおもしろいなと思うことがあります。 But while living in Singapore, there is something I find interesting. シンガポールには、Kiasu という言葉があります。 In Singapore, there is a word called Kiasu. 簡単に言うと、「損をしたくない」「負けたくない」という気持ちです。 Simply put, it means a feeling of not wanting to lose out. 私は、この言葉を聞いた時、少しシンガポールらしい言葉だなと思いました。 When I first heard this word, I felt it was very Singaporean. もちろん、日本人にも同じような人はたくさんいます。 Of course, many Japanese people are like this too. でも、私はあまりその感覚が強くありません。 But I personally do not have that feeling very strongly. だから、シンガポールの人の行動を見て、びっくりすることがあります。 So I sometimes feel surprised when I see how people in Singapore act. 例えば、日本旅行です。 For example, when people travel to Japan. 日本のニュースでは、時々「爆買い」という言葉を聞きます。 In Japanese news, we sometimes hear the word bakugai. 爆買いは、ただたくさん買うという意味ではありません。 Bakugai does not just mean buying a lot. かばんに入らないぐらい、本当にたくさん買うことです。 It means buying so much that it almost does not fit into your bags. お菓子、化粧品、服、キャラクターグッズなどを、山のように買う人もいます。 Some people buy mountains of snacks, cosmetics, clothes, and character goods. リスナーの中にも、「あ、それは私かも」と思った人がいるかもしれません。 Some listeners may be thinking, “Oh, that might be me.” 特に、「期間限定」という言葉を見ると、つい買ってしまう人もいると思います。 Especially when people see the words “limited time only”, they may buy things without thinking too much. 私から見ると、少し不思議です。 From my point of view, it feels a little strange. 「本当に欲しいですか」と思います。 I think, “Do you really want it?” 「それを本当に使いますか」と思います。 I think, “Will you really use it?” 「今持っているものと、何が違いますか」と思うこともあります。 Sometimes I also think, “How is it different from what you already have?” もちろん、かわいいデザインを見ると、欲しくなる気持ちはわかります。 Of course, I understand the feeling of wanting something with a cute design. 新しい物を買うと、うれしい気持ちになるのもわかります。 I also understand that buying something new can make you happy. でも、私はかなり現実的に考えてしまいます。 But I tend to think in a very practical way. 私のルールは、ひとつ買ったら、ひとつ捨てることです。 My rule is: if I buy one thing, I throw one thing away. 例えば、靴が古くなったら、新しい靴を買います。 For example, when my shoes get old, I buy new shoes. そして、古い靴は捨てます。 Then I throw the old shoes away. まだ使える靴がある時は、新しい靴を買いません。 When I still have shoes I can use, I do not buy new ones. 同じ目的の物が二つあっても、私にはあまり意味がありません。 For me, it does not mean much to have two things for the same purpose. でも、たぶん考え方が違うのだと思います。 But maybe the way of thinking is different. 私は「使うこと」を中心に考えます。 I think mainly about using things. でも、物を買うのが好きな人は、「集めること」も楽しんでいるのかもしれません。 But people who like buying things may also enjoy collecting them. 物を持っていること自体が、うれしいのかもしれません。 Maybe simply owning things makes them happy. そう考えると、少しわかる気もします。 When I think about it that way, I feel I can understand it a little. 好きな物が部屋にあると、気分が上がることもあります。 When your favourite things are in your room, they can make you feel good. 見るだけで楽しい物もあります。 Some things are fun just to look at. だから、これは良い悪いの話ではありません。 So this is not about right or wrong. ただの価値観の違いだと思います。 I think it is just a difference in values. でも、ひとつだけ少し心配です。 But there is one thing I worry about a little. 家の中が、物でいっぱいになりませんか。 Does your home not become full of things? 余計なお世話ですね。 That is probably none of my business.

Just relax and enjoy the podcast ==Japanese and English scripts== 最近、私は少し気になることを調べました。 Recently, I looked up something that had been on my mind. それは、日本とシンガポールのカーボンフットプリントです。 It was the carbon footprint of Japan and Singapore. 国全体で見ると、日本の方がずっと大きいです。 If we look at the whole country, Japan is much bigger. でも、1人当たりで見ると、少し違います。 But if we look at it per person, it is a little different. データによると、シンガポールの方が少し多いそうです。 According to the data, Singapore is a little higher. もちろん、理由はいろいろあると思います。 Of course, I think there are many reasons. 国の大きさも違います。 The size of the country is different. 産業の形も違います。 The type of industry is different. 生活のスタイルも違います。 The lifestyle is also different. でも、シンガポールで生活していると、よく思うことがあります。 But living in Singapore, there is something I often think about. それは、エアコンが寒すぎることです。 It is that the air conditioning is too cold. 外はとても暑いです。 Outside, it is very hot. だから、建物の中に入ると、エアコンがあるのは本当にありがたいです。 So when I go inside a building, I am really grateful for air conditioning. でも、時々、涼しいを通り越して寒いです。 But sometimes it is not just cool. It is cold. レストランに入った時、まず「寒い」と思うことがあります。 When I enter a restaurant, sometimes the first thing I think is, “It’s cold.” 映画館や教室でも、同じように感じることがあります。 I sometimes feel the same in cinemas or classrooms. 私は家で寝る時、エアコンを27度か28度にしています。 When I sleep at home, I set the air conditioner to 27 or 28 degrees. それをシンガポールの人に言うと、よく驚かれます。 When I tell people in Singapore this, they are often surprised. 「それは暑くないですか」と聞かれます。 They ask me, “Isn’t that hot?” 中には、18度ぐらいにする人もいるそうです。 I hear some people even set it to around 18 degrees. 私はそれを聞くと、かなりびっくりします。 When I hear that, I am quite surprised. 18度は、私にとっては寒すぎます。 Eighteen degrees is too cold for me. 涼しいというより、もう冬みたいです。 It is not just cool. It feels like winter. もちろん、暑さの感じ方は人によって違います。 Of course, people feel heat differently. 27度では全然涼しくない、と思う人もいると思います。 I think some people feel that 27 degrees is not cool at all. それはわかります。 I understand that. でも、18度は少し極端ではないかなと思います。 But I feel 18 degrees may be a little extreme. シンガポールの学生に聞くと、よくこう言います。 When I ask students in Singapore, they often say this. 「これぐらい寒くしないと我慢できません」 “If it is not this cold, I cannot stand it.” 「27度は、ほとんど外と同じです」 “Twenty-seven degrees is almost the same as outside.” その気持ちも、少しわかります。 I can understand that feeling a little. 暑い国で生活していると、冷たい空気がほしくなります。When you live in a hot country, you want cold air. 外が暑いからこそ、中ではしっかり涼しくしたいのかもしれません。 Maybe because it is hot outside, people want it to be very cool inside. でも、私は時々思います。 But sometimes I think about this. 私たちは、エアコンの寒さに慣れすぎているのかもしれません。 Maybe we are too used to very cold air conditioning. 暑い国で、寒い部屋を作る。 In a hot country, we make cold rooms. そして、寒い部屋に慣れる。 Then we get used to cold rooms. すると、少し暑いだけで、すぐに我慢できなくなる。 Then, when it is just a little hot, we quickly feel we cannot stand it. カーボンフットプリントの数字を見ると、生活の小さな習慣も気になりました。 When I see carbon footprint numbers, I started thinking about small habits in daily life. もちろん、エアコンだけが原因ではありません。 Of course, air conditioning is not the only reason. でも、毎日の生活の中で、考えやすい例だと思います。 But I think it is an easy example to think about in daily life. 快適に生活することは大切です。 Living comfortably is important. でも、その快適さは、本当にそこまで必要なのか。 But is that level of comfort really necessary? 寒いぐらいの部屋が、本当に普通なのか。 Is a room so cold that it feels chilly really normal? 私はシンガポールで生活しながら、よくそんなことを考えます。 Living in Singapore, I often think about these things.

Ep35 - Why Do Students Sit on the Floor?

Students sitting on the floor with cup noodles and drinks.At first, it may look a little strange — but maybe there is something warm hidden in that small scene. ==Japanese and English scripts== みなさんは、外で地面や床に座ることがありますか。 Do you ever sit on the ground or on the floor outside? シンガポールでは、時々おもしろい景色を見ます。 In Singapore, I sometimes see an interesting scene. ショッピングモールの中や、駅へ行く通路で、学生たちが床に座っています。 Inside shopping malls, or in the walkway to a station, students are sitting on the floor. 友達と一緒に座っています。 They are sitting with their friends. カップラーメンを食べている人もいます。 Some are eating cup noodles. ジュースを飲んでいる人もいます。 Some are drinking juice. みんなで円になって、楽しそうに話しています。 They sit in a circle and talk happily. 大きな声で笑っていることもあります。 Sometimes they laugh loudly. 大人になった今の私は、すぐにこう思いました。 Now that I am an adult, I quickly thought this. 「床、汚くないかな。大丈夫かな。」 “Isn’t the floor dirty? Is it okay?” でも、学生たちはあまり気にしていないようでした。 But the students did not seem to care very much. でも、よく考えると、私も昔はそうだったかもしれません。 But when I thought about it carefully, I may have been like that too in the past. 学生の時、学校の床に普通に座っていたと思います。 When I was a student, I think I also sat on the school floor normally. 例えば、学園祭の準備がありました。 For example, there was preparation for a school festival. 教室で、ダンボールを切ったり、色をぬったりしました。 In the classroom, we cut cardboard and painted things. その時、椅子に座らないで、床に座って作業をしていたと思います。 At that time, I think we worked while sitting on the floor, not on chairs. 服が少し汚れても、あまり気にしませんでした。 Even if our clothes got a little dirty, we did not care much. 外で遊んでいる時も同じでした。 It was the same when we played outside. たくさん走って、疲れたら、そのまま座りました。 We ran a lot, and when we got tired, we just sat down. 地面がきれいかどうかは、あまり考えませんでした。 We did not think much about whether the ground was clean or not. 子どもの時は、世界のいろいろな場所が、座ってもいい場所だった気がします。 When we were children, many places in the world felt like places where we could sit. 階段でも、廊下でも、運動場のはしでも、あまり気にしませんでした。 On stairs, in corridors, or at the edge of a sports ground, we did not care much. 今思うと、少しおもしろいです。 When I think about it now, it is a little funny. 大人になると、いろいろなことを考えるようになります。 When we become adults, we start thinking about many things. 服が汚れるかもしれません。 Our clothes might get dirty. 床が汚いかもしれません。 The floor might be dirty. 人に見られるかもしれません。 Other people might see us. だから、すぐに座ることができません。 So we cannot sit down so easily. でも、子どもや学生の時は、もっと自由だった気がします。 But when we were children or students, I feel we were freer. 友達がいて、少し食べ物があって、少し飲み物があれば、それだけで楽しかったです。 If we had friends, a little food, and a little drink, that was enough to have fun. お金はあまりありませんでした。 We did not have much money. 毎週カフェに行くことはできませんでした。 We could not go to cafés every week. でも、床に座って友達と話すだけで、十分楽しかったです。 But just sitting on the floor and talking with friends was enough fun. ジュース一本でも、カップラーメン一つでも、楽しい時間になりました。 Even one bottle of juice or one cup of noodles could become a fun time. シンガポールで学生たちを見ると、私はそのことを思い出しました。 When I saw students in Singapore, I remembered that. 最初は、「床、汚くないかな」と思いました。 At first, I thought, “Isn’t the floor dirty?” でもその後すぐに、別の気持ちも出てきました。 But soon after that, another feeling also came to me. 「ああ、青春だな」と。 “Ah, this is youth.” 友達と集まって、何でもない話をして、大きな声で笑う。 Gathering with friends, talking about nothing special, and laughing loudly. 思い出すと、とても大切な時間だったと思います。 When I remember it, I think it was a very important time. 本当にしょうもないことでも、本気で笑っていました。 We laughed seriously, even at really silly things. 友達の変な顔。 A friend’s funny face. 小さな失敗。 A small mistake. よく分からない冗談。 A joke we did not really understand. そんなことで、お腹が痛くなるくらい笑っていました。 We laughed so much at those things that our stomachs hurt. 帰り道に、みんなでワイワイ集まる場所があまりないなら、ショッピングモールの迷惑にならない場所で座るのも、悪くないのかもしれません。 If there are not many places to gather and chat on the way home, sitting in a place in a shopping mall where they do not bother others may not be so bad. 友達と座って、ジュースを飲んで、楽しく話す。 Sitting with friends, drinking juice, and talking happily. それは、とてもいい時間のように思えます。 That seems like a very nice time. 皆さんの青春時代は、どうでしたか。 What was your youth like?

Ep34 - Have You Read a Book Recently?

Have you read a book recently? I talk about a small surprise I found while thinking about reading in Japan.Maybe it will make you want to open a book again. ==Japanese and English scripts== みなさんは、最近、本を読みましたか。 Have you read a book recently? 私は本を読むことが好きです。 I like reading books. それで最近、日本の読書率について少し調べてみました。 So recently, I looked up Japan’s reading rate a little. すると、国が行った調査を見つけました。 Then I found a survey done by the government. その調査では、1か月に本を1冊も読まない人が、約62パーセントだったそうです。 According to the survey, about 62 percent of people do not read even one book in a month. 私はこれを見て、かなりびっくりしました。 When I saw this, I was quite surprised. 「そんなに多いのか」と思いました。 I thought, “Is it really that many?” 2018年ごろの調査では、この数字は47パーセントぐらいだったそうです。 In a survey around 2018, the number was about 47 percent. そこからさらに増えているので、本を読まない人がかなり多くなっているのだと思います。 Since the number has increased since then, I think more and more people are not reading books. もちろん、本を読まないからといって、文字を読まないわけではないそうです。 Of course, it seems that not reading books does not mean people do not read words. 今は、スマホでたくさんの文字を読みます。 Now, we read many words on our phones. ニュースの記事を読みます。 We read news articles. SNSの投稿も読みます。 We also read posts on social media. 短いコメントも読みます。 We read short comments too. 特に日本では、Xを使う人が多いです。 Especially in Japan, many people use X. 昔の名前で言うと、ツイッターですね。 Using the old name, it is Twitter. シンガポールにいる人には、少し意外かもしれません。 For people in Singapore, this may be a little surprising. 日本では、Xが今でもかなり人気です。 In Japan, X is still quite popular. だから、文字を読む時間はあると思います。 So I think people still have time when they read words. でも、本を読む時間は減っているのかもしれません。 But maybe the time for reading books is decreasing. 同じ調査では、読書量が前より減ったという人も、約7割いたそうです。 In the same survey, about 70 percent of people said they read less than before. 理由として多かったのは、スマホやゲームなどです。 A common reason was phones, games, and similar things. たしかに、この気持ちはよく分かります。 Actually, I understand this feeling very well. 少しだけスマホを見るつもりでも、時間がすぐに過ぎます Even if I plan to look at my phone only a little, time passes quickly. 5分だけのつもりが、30分になることがあります。 I plan to use it for five minutes, but sometimes it becomes thirty minutes. 気がついたら、もう寝る時間です。 When I notice, it is already time to sleep. 本を開く前に、一日が終わってしまいます。 The day ends before I open a book. 私は本が好きなので、少し残念だなと思います。 I like books, so I feel a little sad about this. 本を読むのが少し面倒だと感じるのは、よく分かります。 I understand that reading a book can feel a little troublesome. でも、一度だまされたと思って読んでみると、けっこう面白いですよ。 But if you try reading one once, just as an experiment, it can actually be quite interesting. 本を読めば、一人の時間を過ごすことができます。 When you read a book, you can spend time alone. 静かな時間を過ごすこともできます。 You can also spend quiet time. 自分の教養を深めることもできます。 You can deepen your knowledge and culture.頭や心を落ち着かせることもできます。 You can also calm your mind and heart. ただ、私も人のことは言えません。 However, I cannot really criticise other people. 私は今でも本は読んでいます。 I still read books now. でも、長い映画を見るのが、少し苦手になりました。 But I have become a little bad at watching long films. YouTubeの短い動画に慣れてしまったからかもしれません Maybe it is because I have got used to short videos on YouTube. 昔は、2時間の映画を普通に見ていました。 In the past, I could watch a two-hour film normally. でも今は、「長いな」と感じることがあります。 But now, I sometimes feel, “This is long.” そう考えると、本を読まない人の気持ちも分かります。 When I think about it like that, I understand people who do not read books. 本が嫌いになったわけではないと思います。 I do not think people necessarily hate books. ただ、ほかに楽なものが増えたのだと思います。 I think there are just more easy things now. すぐに見られるもの。 Things we can watch immediately. 短い時間で楽しめるもの。 Things we can enjoy in a short time. そういうものが、毎日の中にたくさんあります。 There are many things like that in our daily lives. でも、たまには本を読む時間もいいと思います。 But I think it is nice to read a book sometimes. たくさん読まなくてもいいです。 We do not need to read many books. 難しい本でなくてもいいです。 It does not need to be a difficult book. 少しだけでもいいと思います。 Even a little is fine, I think. スマホから少し離れて、ゆっくり文字を読む。 We move away from our phone a little and read slowly. そういう時間も、今の生活には大切な気がします。 I feel that this kind of time is also important in our lives now.
