The Limits of Academic Freedom and the Need for Viewpoint Diversity: Internal and External Pressures

The Fika Crew welcomes Jonathan Thigpen, PharmD, Professor and Assistant Dean at Samford University's McWhorter School of Pharmacy, to discuss First Amendment rights, academic freedom, and viewpoint diversity.  Jonathan walks us through the 1915 American Association of University Professors (AAUP) declaration on academic freedom, which continues to anchor most faculty handbooks. We discuss the current landscape in American Universities where internal forces are calling for reforms to address self-censorship before external forces mandate restrictions.  While its not always clear where the boundaries are, academic freedom can't be used to justify skipping department meetings or refusing to use active learning strategies in your instruction (sorry!). Objective Structured Clinical Exams (OSCEs) - When is the Juice Worth the Squeeze?

OSCEs—those beloved (and sometimes dreaded) Objective Structured Clinical Examinations—have become a cornerstone of pharmacy education. But are they always worth the enormous investment of time, money, and faculty energy? In this episode, the Fika Crew digs into a thought-provoking paper by Gortney, Meny, and Dunn [https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ajpe.2026.101938] that takes a critical eye to how and when OSCEs should be used. It’s the kind of rich, nuanced conversation that only happens when you bring together a few friends who care deeply about getting assessment right. So, grab a snack and your favorite beverage. 👏  Congratulations to Jeff Cain on receiving the prestigious Chalmers Distinguished Pharmacy Educator Award!  🎉 Intro and Fika Snack Sharing: 0:00 - 3:17 OSCE Discussion: 3:18 Resources Gortney JS, Meny LM, Dunn BL. Sabbatical Stories: Reclaiming Space for Reflection, Learning, and New Directions

The Fika Crew welcomes Zubin Austin, Ph.D. (University of Toronto), who recently completed his sabbatical, and Hayley Blackburn, Pharm.D. (University of Montana), who is right in the middle of hers, to explore the why, when, and how of academic sabbaticals. Preferment: Achieving Autonomy, Mastery, and Purpose After Full-Time Employment

Just prior to cranberry season, the Fika Crew met with Lucinda Maine, PhD. - CEO Emerita, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy - to chat about her preferment (aka retirement) journey.  Tina also shares her fascination with candied cranberry videos.  If you are curious, be sure to watch Thyme to Cook with Kristi. I Tried the Viral Candied Cranberry. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=982wD-2EnFw] November 20, 2025. [YouTube Video] Preferment is a modern concept reframing retirement as a proactive, fulfulling stage of life focused on doing what you prefer, rather than simply ending work; it's about pursuing meaningful activities, passions, and purpose with freedom and flexibility, shifting from "retiring from" to "aspiring to" a life aligned with your values, using wisdom and energy for continued growth, contribution, and joy. It emphasizes a planned transition that integrates purpose, relationships, health, and finances, often through gradual changes.   Intro and Fika Snack Sharing: 0:00 - 4:27 Preferment : 4:28   Resources Silver MP, Wong JV, Barrett K, et al.  A scope review and synthesis of the literature on retirement among academic health professionals [https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s44250-025-00221-x].  Disocver Health Systems 2025; 4: Article 45.  Goodall J and Abrams D.
