I’m excited to introduce you to Dr. Sam Shay. Sam’s personal health journey began at a young age, facing chronic unwellness from severe fatigue, anxiety, digestive problems, chronic pain, insomnia, depression, and poor nutrition. He took control of his health as a teenager, dedicating his life to natural medicine. Today, Sam is known as the friendly "lab nerd," specializing in functional lab and genetic analysis to deliver data-driven results. Sam is a dedicated chiropractor and functional medicine practitioner who specializes in solving health puzzles for busy, health-conscious parents, entrepreneurs, and adults on the spectrum. Sam’s mission is to help individuals exit survival mode and re-enter community life with increased resilience and energy, utilizing the power of functional genetics. In our conversation, you'll hear about: * His health struggles and the pivotal moments that led him to alternative and functional medicine. * His journey from being chronically unwell to becoming a health practitioner. * How he used functional genetics to address his own health challenges, including severe inflammation, dietary issues, and genetic predispositions. * How genetics influence health, but are not the only influence. * How higher-order genetic drivers, like genes regulating inflammation, free radical scavenging, liver detox capacity, and vitamin D utilization, have a more significant influence on overall health than and do the genes for breast cancer, Alzheimer’s or other conditions * Sam’s 10 pillars of health framework, which helps identify and address the root causes of chronic health issues * And insights into genetic testing and genetic analysis and how it can be used to create personalized health strategies Sam's story is a powerful testament to the importance of taking personal agency over one's health and the incredible benefits of functional medicine and genetics. Lastly, Sam is also a stand-up comic who uses comedy as "edutainment" on his Youtube Channel, along with his other functional testing teachings. His primary focus in comedy is to educate the public on what it's like to be on the Spectrum, specifically Aspergers. No matter the health challenges you face, Sam’s journey is an inspiring reminder that recovery and well-being are within reach. In this episode of Rebuilding My Health Radio, I’m bringing you one of the most important interviews and stories I’ve ever had the honor of capturing. In the episode, I interview Francis McNear, or Frank, who was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s 12 years ago, at the age of 62. The average life expectancy for someone diagnosed is typically about a decade and it’s a frightening decline. And yet… 12 years after his diagnosis, Frank and I had an intelligent conversation about his journey back from Alzheimer's. Frank went on to write his story and title the book, Defeating Dementia. That would not have been possible if he had not overhead a conversation years ago – while having lunch – about a promising approach to cognitive decline that was uncovered by the neurologist Dr. Dale Bredesen. At the time, 9 out of 10 of the participants in a small study had seen improvements in their dementia. Now, hundreds are finding help with a precision medicine approach. This is compared to over 400 failed clinical trials for Alzheimer’s drugs. In our conversation, Frank candidly shares… * What it was like to begin losing his cognition and the fallout in his business and relationships * His struggle to come to terms with what was happening * How he got a diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer’s * How he found an alternative Alzheimer’s treatment * What the approach looked like for him and the impact on his cognitive abilities * And finally, what his life is like today He’s living a vibrant life and has written several books since his diagnosis. And he’s thrilled to have become a grandfather for the first time and able to really enjoy his granddaughter. My hope is that Frank’s story gives you hope and inspiration and a new understanding of what’s possible. Frank is by no means the only one experiencing life-changing results with a precision medicine approach to dementia.
