Take One: Backstage - Eastside Radio

Hi there and welcome to another ep of Take One Backstage taking you behind the scenes of Sydney’s live music scene. Yes! It’s been quite a while I know since I’ve uploaded an episode. Now I won’t take you through what’s been happening between now and then but the good news is that I’ve now got two extra pairs of hands on deck and making not only this podcast but the radio edition of the pod, Take One, happen. They are the wonderful Max Wills who is the new Audio Producer of the show and Jayne Franco who is the new Social Media Producer. They’ve been intro’ed on the radio edition of the pod, but if you missed that, don’t fret, they will also be getting added to the pod too. Getting back to this week’s ep though, I’m very excited to share this most recent chat with Alice Terry. She’s launching her debut album ‘The Fear of Alice Terry’ on the 16th and 17th of June at Leadbelly in Newtown. Race over and grab your tix if you hear this in time as she’s already sold out the 16th. I don’t think I’ve laughed so hard, my face hurt so much from any interview thus far. There is also a drinking game attached to this interview which you’ll hear about later, and also an expletive warning. Welcome to our ‘Jazz Meets World Week’ for the Learn it Live project! To give you a little taste of what an outstanding example of what a powerful female Indigenous role model look’s like here’s a few key facts about our feature artist: - She's performed alongside the likes of Shellie Morris, Troy Cassar Daley and the Impossible Odds - She’s played to thousands at both national and global festivals like Woodford Folk, Island Vibes and EthnoSweden, and - She’s written songs with the likes of Powerderfinger’s own Bernard Fanning Now you’d think she must have been working at the music business for quite some time given those achievements right? Well sort of…. she did start honing her skills at the tender age of SIX amongst her musical family, became a multi-instrumentalist in her teens and continues to break records and stereotypes at just 20 years of age! Today Take One: Backstage is joined by Emily Wurramara to chat to her about her debut release ‘Black Smoke’. Although her primary genre of choice is not Jazz, she started out by listening to the likes of Billie Holiday (“her Queen”), and Louis Armstrong, alongside the likes of Mary J Blige, UB40, 2PAC and more to come up with her unique blend of Folk meets Indigenous meets, Hip-Hop meets more. This week’s chat follows her through her entire career, finding her voice, meeting her mentor and manager Jo Pratt, crafting her musical identity both on stage and through her music, and the connections she makes through all of her art to the land, her family and her history as a proud Anindilyakwa woman. She see’s her work as vital to preserving that history, her language and filling the gap in her home town of female musical role model’s.
