The Construction Veteran Podcast
Send us a Message! [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2142888/fan_mail/new] The job site lessons that matter most aren’t locked inside one trade, and they aren’t reserved for people with decades in the same role. I’m Scott Friend, a project manager in commercial demolition in the Dallas Fort Worth market, and I’m making a shift with the Construction Veteran Podcast: more cross-trade conversations, more practical solo episodes, and a bigger audience than just one corner of the industry. I share where I’m coming from, including time in the Navy, a stretch on the insurance side of construction, and what that taught me about leadership, discipline, relationships, and the “boring” parts of the business that protect the work when projects go sideways. We get real about why honesty beats posturing, and why comparing notes across roles helps all of us shorten the trial-and-error phase. Then we dig into the lessons that keep showing up no matter what you build: experience isn’t just years on the clock, it’s paying attention to mistakes long enough to learn from them; silence on a job site is rarely neutral and often signals a conversation that needs to happen now; and documentation, contracts, and communication trails aren’t bureaucracy, they’re how you defend good work and avoid unnecessary friction. I also preview what’s coming next, like how experienced people walk a job, why estimating is an educated guess until the contract locks it in, how small assumptions turn into big problems, and why closeout is where the next opportunity often gets decided. If you want practical construction management advice that respects every trade and assumes good faith, subscribe, share this with a teammate, and leave a review. What’s a hard lesson you learned on a project that you wish someone had told you sooner?
