Step onto East King Street in Lancaster and you might do a double take—because rising among the modern storefronts is what looks like a medieval fortress. In this episode, we explore the imposing Lancaster County Prison, a structure as intimidating as it is historic, and unpack its 250-year evolution from a humble colonial lockup to a stone-walled stronghold. But this isn’t just a story about architecture. It’s a story about escape. We dive into two of the most unbelievable jailbreaks in Lancaster County history—one in 1883 and another in 1971—where, despite nearly a century of technological change, the exact same number of prisoners managed to break free. From a mastermind who used a pet canary to outsmart the system to a modern-era escape that defied every safeguard, these stories reveal how ingenuity can exploit even the most formidable defenses. It’s a deep dive into crime, creativity, and the strange history behind one of Lancaster’s most striking and mysterious landmarks.

Billmeyer and the White Cliffs of Conoy

In this episode, we explore the vanished company town of Billmeyer, Pennsylvania, and the strange white cliffs it left behind along the Susquehanna River. What begins as the story of a small lime-burning operation grows into a much larger tale of industrial ambition, as Billmeyer becomes a booming quarry town whose limestone and dolomite helped fuel the steel industry, support wartime production, and build major pieces of Pennsylvania infrastructure.  The episode also follows the human side of that rise and fall, from the rough culture of an isolated company town to the hardships of the 1918 flu quarantine, when residents were so cut off that supplies had to be thrown from passing trains. As the industry faded, the town slowly emptied, its homes and businesses disappeared, and the landscape was reclaimed by water, forest, and time.  Today, little remains of Billmeyer except foundations, memories, and the haunting white cliffs of Conoy, formed from generations of industrial waste. More than a ghost town story, this episode is about labor, geology, impermanence, and the strange ways abandoned industry can become part of the natural landscape.  To learn more, visit UnchartedLancaster.com [https://unchartedlancaster.com/the-rise-and-fall-of-billmeyer-and-the-white-cliffs-of-conoy/]. The Pawpaw: America’s Forgotten Fruit

This episode explores the surprising story of the pawpaw, North America’s largest native sweet fruit. Often described as tasting like a mix of banana, mango, and pineapple, the pawpaw seems tropical but thrives in temperate forests from the Midwest to the Mid-Atlantic. The episode traces its journey from prehistoric megafauna and Indigenous foodways to its role as a survival food for explorers, Civil War soldiers, and freedom seekers on the Underground Railroad. It also examines why the pawpaw disappeared from mainstream grocery stores, how folklore and place names kept its memory alive, and why the fruit is now experiencing a comeback among foragers, chefs, brewers, and sustainable agriculture advocates. Along the way, the episode highlights the pawpaw’s strange biology, ecological importance, and potential future as a resilient native crop.

Lancaster’s Soldiers and Sailors Monument

In this episode, we explore Lancaster’s Soldiers and Sailors Monument, the 43-foot granite memorial standing in the middle of Penn Square, and uncover how one monument can carry centuries of local and national history at once. The story traces the monument’s Civil War origins, its powerful symbolism, and its placement on ground already tied to the Treaty of Lancaster and the one-day session of the Continental Congress in 1777.  The episode also follows how the monument evolved over time, as new plaques expanded its meaning beyond the Civil War and modern city life repeatedly collided with it through traffic redesigns, political fights, celebrations, accidents, and restoration efforts. More than a story about stone and sculpture, this is an episode about public memory, urban change, and how a city chooses to keep its history visible in the middle of everyday life.

Safe Harbor Dam: Taming the Susquehanna

In this episode, we explore the dramatic story of Safe Harbor, Pennsylvania, from its days as an ironmaking boomtown to its eventual destruction by the Susquehanna River and rebirth as the site of one of the region’s most important hydroelectric projects. The episode traces how the river’s wild geology made it a disaster for navigation but an ideal source of electrical power, setting the stage for the construction of the Safe Harbor Dam.  Along the way, the story moves through failed canal dreams, the rise and fall of the Safe Harbor ironworks, the devastating 1904 ice gorge that erased much of the town, and the enormous engineering effort that transformed the river in the 1930s. It also highlights the workers, company housing, archaeology, and technological innovations tied to the dam’s construction and operation.  At its core, this episode is about how human ambition adapted to a river that refused to be controlled on ordinary terms. What people could not force into a shipping route, they eventually turned into a powerhouse that helped electrify the region and reshape the landscape forever.
