The writer of this song had planned a trip to Europe by ship with his wife and their four daughters. He was delayed in Chicago by last-minute business, so he sent his family ahead on the ship. While crossing the Atlantic, the ship was struck by another vessel and sank in just 12 minutes. His four daughters tragically perished, but his wife survived. She was pulled from the water and sent him a telegram that contained the devastating words "saved alone...what shall I do?" He immediately set sail across the Atlantic to join his grieving wife. During the voyage, the ship's Captain called him to his cabin to inform him that they were passing over the exact spot where the ship had sunk and his children had been lost. In the midst of unspeakable grief and on those very waters, he penned the famous words to this song that begins with "when peace like a river, attendeth my way...when sorrows like sea billows roll".
