Acerca de End of Life Conversations: Normalizing Talk About Death, Dying, and Grief

Death touches us all, and yet our culture rarely makes space to talk about it openly. Why is it so hard to have honest conversations about death, dying, and loss with the people we love? What do we do with grief when it inevitably arrives?End of Life Conversations is a podcast dedicated to normalizing these essential conversations. Hosts Reverent Mother Annalouiza Armendariz and Reverend Wakil David Matthews — both seasoned hospice chaplains and end-of-life companions — invite experts and everyday voices alike: funeral directors, death doulas, poets, researchers, grief counselors, and people who've walked right up to the edge of life and returned. Together, they explore what it means to prepare for death, sit with loss, and grieve in ways that are as individual as we are.And weekly, we share a conversation with our friend Sam Zemke about something that is currently speaking to us.Whether you're supporting a loved one through a terminal illness, searching for the right words to start a difficult conversation, or simply curious about what a more death-positive life might look like, this podcast meets you where you are. No question is too strange. No path looks the same.Subscribe, reach out, and join the conversation. Because the time to talk about it is now. endoflifeconvo@gmail.com |  endoflifeconvos.substack.comWe want to thank our excellent editor, Sam Zemkee. We also acknowledge that we live and work on unceded indigenous peoples' lands. We thank them for their generations of stewardship, which continues to this day, and honor them by doing all we can to create a sustainable planet and support the flourishing of all life, both human and more-than-human.

Weekly Dispatch | Confronting the Grief and Reality of Animal Suffering

Send us Fan Mail [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2257447/fan_mail/new] Animal suffering is a reality that many people would rather not think about, yet for those who become aware of it, the emotional impact can be profound. Why do we grieve for animals we've never met? What happens when compassion collides with the realities of modern food systems? And how can we respond without becoming overwhelmed, numb, or consumed by guilt? In this Weekly Dispatch, we explore the grief, moral distress, and ethical questions that arise when we confront animal suffering. We discuss factory farming, empathy, collective grief, animal welfare, ethical food choices, and the challenge of living according to our values in an imperfect world. Whether you're a death-positive advocate, caregiver, creator, animal lover, or someone simply trying to make sense of difficult realities, this conversation offers a compassionate and grounded approach to navigating grief and taking meaningful action. In this episode: • Understanding animal suffering in modern food systems • Why we grieve for animals we never knew • Collective grief, compassion, and moral injury • Animal welfare and ethical food choices • How to respond without shame, guilt, or perfectionism • Small actions that can make a meaningful difference #AnimalSuffering #CollectiveGrief #AnimalWelfare #FoodEthics #FactoryFarming #GriefAndLoss #Compassion #EthicalEating #DeathPositive #EndOfLifeConversations Sustainable Agriculture - World Wildlife Frontier [https://www.worldwildlife.org/our-work/food/sustainable-agriculture/] Agriculture for a better planet- Green Earth [https://www.green.earth/agriculture] Farm Animal Welfare - Humane World for Animals [https://www.humaneworld.org/en/issue/farmed-animal-welfare] What You Can Do for Farmed Animals - Animal Welfare Institute [https://awionline.org/wycd/what-you-can-do-for-farmed-animals/] Support the show [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2257447/support] We very much want to hear your thoughts. Good Grief, Pass the Bread, Mom is Dead | Angela Nissel on Grief and Caregiving a Dying Parent

Send us Fan Mail [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2257447/fan_mail/new] When Angela Nissel's mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, nobody told her — not even her mom. So when the caregiving began, Angela was completely unprepared. What followed was a crash course in love, loss, grief, and what it actually means to show up for someone who is dying. In this episode, Angela — award-winning author of Good Grief, Pass the Bread, Mom is Dead — talks honestly about the checklist mentality that takes over when we're scared, what a hospice worker said that changed everything, and why the moments that felt like failure turned out to be some of her most meaningful memories with her mother. Whether you're in the middle of caregiving right now, carrying grief from a loss, or you work alongside people who are — this conversation will meet you where you are. In this episode: → What no one tells you about caring for a dying parent → How to stop treating grief like a to-do list → What hospice taught her about love, loss, and letting go 📖 Angela's book: Good Grief, Pass the Bread, Mom is Dead  [https://share.google/V8AyXi8Wbp4yXP3lD] Support the show [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2257447/support] We very much want to hear your thoughts. Weekly Dispatch - Reclaiming our Roots, Ancestral Grief & The Myth of the Melting Pot

Send us Fan Mail [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2257447/fan_mail/new] What happens when the stories we've inherited about identity, belonging, and culture no longer feel complete, and we find ourselves feeling disconnected from our family history? For many of us, the line back to our ancestors was interrupted by colonization, migration, assimilation, adoption, or simple silence. That interruption leaves a real kind of grief, even when we don't have words for it. In this conversation, we explore Indigenous identity, ancestral grief, intergenerational trauma, cultural belonging, and the enduring influence of the "melting pot" narrative. Together, we examine how migration, colonization, assimilation, and family history can shape our relationship to ourselves, our communities, and our sense of home. And we notice how grief and joy can — and often do — show up in the same breath when we begin this work. In this episode, Annalouiza, Sam, and Wakil discuss: • Indigenous identity and cultural reconnection • Ancestral grief and inherited loss • Intergenerational trauma and healing • The history and limits of the melting pot ideal • Cultural belonging, ancestry, and community • Practical ways to reconnect with roots and heritage • What grief can teach us about identity and remembrance This conversation is for anyone navigating grief, exploring ancestry, questioning inherited narratives, or seeking a deeper sense of belonging in a rapidly changing world. #IndigenousIdentity #AncestralGrief #IntergenerationalTrauma #CulturalBelonging #GriefAndLoss #Ancestry #Healing #Identity #Community #DeathPositive #ancestor work #cultural identity #healing through ancestry #reconnecting with roots #grief and loss #indigenous heritage #reclaiming culture #death positive Stonehenge by Bernard Cornwell [https://share.google/ejzKTR2BkmGqo8U36]  Support the show [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2257447/support] We very much want to hear your thoughts.
