The Coin | Jack the Spacedog

After what feels like a lifetime stranded on the planet of a lost civilization, Aon and Jack have settled into something resembling a rhythm — daily training with Tim (the terminally irritable machine), manifested pizza, coffee in the morning, and paintings of Jack. Progress has been made. Real progress. But today, Tim does something unexpected. He clears the training ground and sets a single coin on a pedestal. Pick it up — go home. Turn it over — keep training. For Aon, it's not that simple. He's become two people: the frightened young man who misses home, and something larger — a repository of an entire civilization's memory, coolly calculating what's best for everyone. These two minds can't agree. So he does what any cosmic drifter would do. He flips the coin while Tim explains why fate doesn't exist. We'll leave it there.
