An emeritus history professor at Coker College in South Carolina, Dr. Lay studies Ku Klux Klan activity and the history of Racism in the United States. Gus discovered his 1995 publication, Hooded Knights on the Niagara: The Ku Klux Klan in Buffalo, New York, while preparing to speak with Anna Blatto. With Payton Gendron's most recent White Terrorist attack at an east Buffalo Tops grocery store, Gus thought Dr. Lay's book should be plastered on media outlets nationwide, along with Joseph G. Christopher's reign of terrorism, to provide accurate historical context. That has not happened. We'll discuss the highly educated, well-to-do White Men who joined the notorious terrorist organization, and we'll highlight the continuity between the KKK concerns of a century ago to the current-day gripes of Payton Gendron and Whites collectively. Interestingly, very early in the text, Dr. Lay reveals that he is married to a "woman of color." On 6/15/2022 The ACLU National releases the full 170-page bombshell report titled: Captive Labor Exploitation of Incarcerated Workers. "Though this report centers on the gratuitously harsh conditions of contemporary prison labor, it is embedded in larger conversations about racism, sexism, the U.S. criminal legal system, the 13th Amendment, and the ultimate morality of this country’s vast network of prisons, jails, and detention facilities." Yusuf and Max have been digging through the report and we'll pull out some major highlights. It's our last broadcast before we hit the road on our way to NC and VT. On 6/17/22 Max will be the Plenary Speaker at the Southern Appalachian Yearly Meeting and Association of the Religious Society of Friends. Also known as the Quakers. After a dozen years of working with the Quakers, Community Max is hoping to see them rededicate themselves as traditional and present allies of the US slavery abolitionist movement. We’ll examine news reports from the past seven days and – hopefully – promote a constructive dialog. #ANTIBLACKNESS Investigations and criminal proceedings related to the insurrection on January 6th, 2021 continue, even though there's still no evidence that Whites will adequately prosecute all of the Whites involved in last year's murder and mayhem. This week, reports continued to emphasize the role of White Supremacists individuals and groups in the Washington D.C. terrorism. Also this week, members of Congress passed gun legislation in response to the most recent public shootings in Uvalde and Buffalo. Most experts have acknowledged these proposals have little chance of being approved by the Senate. We'll review reports the Wells Fargo conducted "fake" interviews under the pretense of commitment to diversity inclusion and equity. Non-white people were interviewed for jobs that were already promised to White candidates. We'll also discuss the tragic shooting death of Dr. Preston Phillips, who was killed in last week's Tulsa, Oklahoma hospital shooting. This is a painful illustration of why non-white people, especially those classified as black, should prioritize their security and well-being and inquire, often if needed, about safety initiatives and workplace violence prevention.
