Greenville County Schools (Greenville, SC) is Building a Better Graduate through Graduation Plus. Recognizing that jobs in today’s workforce require more than a high school education, Greenville County Schools is committed to graduating students with a diploma, plus a technical certification and/or college credit. Graduation Plus is a district-wide initiative from pre-K through high school to ensure all students are career and college ready. This podcast features interviews with district leaders, classroom teachers and students involved in "learn to earn" curricula.

Greenville County Schools has eleven magnet academies. The academic program of each academy offers a theme or focus that is designed to give students an opportunity to explore a special interest, gift, talent or skill. These schools attract top students and talented teachers who bring innovative ideas to the classroom. Teachers are chosen based on their academic preparation, professional experience, and specialized skills. Admission into magnet academies is open to all eligible students, but spaces are limited. Greenville County Schools partners with the Greenville Chamber to provide paid internships to high school students at businesses in their career interest area. We select high energy, high achieving, goal driven students. The Chamber recruits businesses looking to create a talent pipeline and fill the jobs of the future.

This week "Building a Better Graduate" travels to Enoree Career Center. Enoree is one of four career centers in Greenville County Schools offering certification in culinary arts, auto tech, machine tool, welding, mechatronics, HVAC, law enforcement, firefighting, cosmetology, building construction and more. We chat with Director Brana Myers, Chef Holly Bell and welding Instructor Jamie Walden about fighting the stigma of "vocational" schools and changing perceptions about careers in manufacturing.

Superintendent Dr. Burke Royster talks about opportunities in Greenville County Schools to earn college credit, credit in a college major and industry certifications. Certifications can lead to college scholarships and jobs that pay more than double the minimum wage.
