This a podcast where we turn pain into power, isolation into a connection. Today’s topic is Why Nervous System Regulation Matters During High Activity Social Times Like Easter (Especially with Chronic Illness). I am sat at my desk with a grey hoodie on, with green tea on the side. The glam squad didn’t turn up this morning, so not video am afraid. The weather is miserable cloudly and misty, but not surprising and typical for most bank holiday period. Today, am doing something completely different recording straight from my substack without any editing via another platform, lets see how this goes. I just finished a 5 minute guided breathwork session on YouTube called “Instant Relaxation: Nervous System Regulation” with Breath with Sandy [https://youtu.be/8GTd3u_qwGA?si=LMTPXBuH35zd1eDf]. And honestly? It was the first time today my body felt like it could exhale. Easter weekend is lovely, but it can also be a high activity, demanding period. Family or social gatherings, changed routines, noise, questions, food, travel. For anyone running on low reserves, that high activity mode doesn’t feel festive. It feels like your nervous system is bracing for impact. That’s why nervous system regulation matters so much right now. When your vagus nerve and parasympathetic system are working well, your body can shift from survival mode (fight or flight) to rest and digest. But for those of us with chronic illness like fibromyalgia and other related conditions, that switch is often stuck or sluggish. The result? Even small stressors like a crowded table or a child yelling can trigger pain, fatigue, and sensory overwhelm. I have also been dealing with on and off anemia since my early twenties. Honestly, probably even earlier than that. Right now my symptoms have been playing up and I am in the process of adjusting my iron supplements. Simple routines along with Fibromyalgia, ME/CFS, and other related conditions can leave your body feeling heavy, and your sensory activity can become more heightened. So a focus on calming the nervous system can be just what the doctor ordered for you. So today I decided to tap into breathwork not as a cure, but as a small, accessible tool to help restore my body. Just five minutes. In through the nose, longer out through the mouth. No perfection required. I must admit that over the years I have dipped in and out of Yoga and Pilates. I like the concept of Meditation, but it doesn’t work for me at the moment due to short attention span tendencies. The breath did not erase my anemia and sensory symptoms, but it gave my nervous system permission to downshift. Less bracing. More space. The five minute routine was my cup of tea to help me prepare for the day. It doesn’t require much focus, yet it helped improve my breathing and quieted my sensory activity even further. That is something beneficial to be mindful of with fibromyalgia. QUESTION FOR YOU! * What could you actually enjoy this Easter Holiday period if your nervous system wasn’t working so hard to keep you safe? * What would feel lighter if your nervous system finally got a real break? If high energy holidays leave you depleted, especially with chronic illness or low iron, I gently invite you to try five minutes of breathwork. Not to perform relaxation. Just to offer your body a tiny rest. I am wishing you a good Easter holiday period. One that feels restorative rather than overextending. Also remember, “I can’t make it” is a full sentence, which doesn’t require apologies or guilt attached to it. Your well being matters. Connect with me here!
