Acerca de Columbia Tech Ventures
Columbia Technology Ventures is the tech transfer office of Columbia University. Our core objective is to facilitate the transfer of inventions from academic research to outside organizations for the benefit of society on a local, national and global basis. Each year, CTV manages more than 330 invention disclosures from faculty, 70 license deals and 15 new start-ups, involving approximately 45 multi-disciplinary, full-time staff across Columbia's two campuses. CTV currently has over 1200 patent assets available for licensing, across research fields such as bio, IT, cleantech, devices, nanotechnology, and material science.

AUTM 'VCs Talk Back' Part 1 by Columbia Technology Ventures

Panel discussion with Garrard Beeney (Partner and Co-Head of the Intellectual Property and Technology Group at Sullivan & Cromwell), Ian McClure (Director at the Office of Technology Commercialization at the University of Kentucky, and former IPXI), Phil Hartstein (President and CEO of Finjan), John Veschi (CEO of Marquis Technologies and Former CEO of Rockstar), and Jeff Sears (Associate General Counsel and Chief Patent Counsel at Columbia University) covering such questions as “What is ‘efficient infringement’ and how have the new patent laws changed the licensing landscape?” (minute 1), “Advice for startups who believe their IP is being infringed by large companies?” (minute 14), “Advice on patent strategies for tech startups, vs. biopharma startups?” (minute 19); “What advice would you give the new Presidential, Secretary of Commerce, and the Director of the USPTO about intellectual property policy over the next 4 years?” (minute 28).

Panel discussion between Sean Dalton (Partner at Highland Capital Partners), Joe Ellis (CEO and Co-Founder of vidRovr), Hemai Parthasarathy (Scientific Director of Breakout Labs, Thiel Foundation), Nina Tandon (CEO and Co-Founder of EpiBone), and Misti Ushio (CEO of TARA Biosystems). The first 35 minutes are largely introductions to each of the panelists, explaining their career paths that lead them to becoming entrepreneurs or investors. The next 45 minutes are a lively panel discussion answering questions such as “What role does IP play in starting a company” (minute 35), “how do license deals get negotiated and what are common terms, especially with university startups” (minute 50), “best practices for startups on how to build a cost-effective IP filing strategy” (minute 62); “why does IP have particularly important value at the beginning and end of a startup’s lifecycle?” (minute 65), “advice for students who want to be entrepreneurs and investors?” (minute 67).
