Max Dubiel - The Roastery Inside a Prison

Max Dubiel was raised by two German academics whose dinner table conversation ran more to politics than business - secure employment was the ambition, and risk didn’t really feature. Their careers took the family from Italy to America before Max attended St Andrews University, where he met people who would later become his business partners. He co-founded Black Sheep Coffee, and then proposed something no one had tried before: a roastery inside a prison. Redemption Roasters now runs twelve London coffee shops, with over 1,700 prison leavers through the programme. But he is careful about making it sound noble. It was an opportunity first, and the changed lives were a consequence of its success. He is a firm believer that profit and purpose have always been able to coexist, a blueprint more businesses could stand to borrow from. From hearing her Scottish grandmother’s stories of a Galloway girl selling handmade decorations, to den building with her cousins in woods of Kirkcudbright, she quickly found a love for creativity, the outdoors, and entrepreneurship, which has since grown into a remarkable success. Creating arrangements for Ellie Goulding’s wedding, and decorating the main arch at Chelsea Flower show are just a few of Tattie and her team’s achievements.
