Building Worlds is led by the creatives, writers and artists behind the making of GALWAD [https://galwad.cymru/] – an ambitious pan-Wales story set in the future – and inspirational peers in their fields. It is hosted by award-winning investigative journalist and researcher, Shirish Kulkarni. GALWAD, part of UNBOXED: Creativity in the UK, will see Wales’ boldest talent in screen, performance and creative technology create a multi-platform story with participants across Wales to unfold in real-time over a week – exploring a possible future in 30 years’ time. In this first episode of Building Worlds, writer and BAFTA-winning actress Emily Burnett sits down with multi-award winning screenwriter Abi Morgan to discuss their breakthrough moments and writing for screen in 2022. Informal and open to all, each Building Worlds talk will explore breakthrough ideas in the fields of screenwriting, production design, co-creation, working with young people, choreography and movement direction and transmedia storytelling. Duration: 45 minutes ABOUT THE SPEAKERS Emily Burnett is an emerging writer and BAFTA winning actress. She is currently being mentored by Abi Morgan as a part of the Literature Wales Professional Development Programme for Writers of Colour 2021/22. Her recent radio drama H is for Hair was broadcast on BBC Radio 4. Emily was a part of the BBC Writer’s Room Welsh Voices cohort of 2019/20. Her writing often centres around the visibility of unrepresented voices and communities, looking at how we can amplify unheard voices. Emily is also an ambassador for the charity MENCAP where she aims to use her position in the industry to amplify the voices of those with Learning Disabilities and their families. Abi Morgan is currently working on an adaptation of Manhattan Beach for Wildgaze, an original series for Netflix and Sister Pictures, as well as The Split Season 3 for Sister Pictures/BBC. Abi’s work includes TV series The Split, Sex Traffic, The Hour and My Fragile Heart. Her feature films include Shame, The Iron Lady, The Invisible Woman, Suffragette and Brick Lane. Her theatre work includes The Mistress Contract (Royal Court Theatre), Fugee (The National Theatre) and Love Song (Frantic Assembly, Lyric Hammersmith). ABOUT THE HOST Shirish Kulkarni is an award-winning investigative journalist, researcher and community organiser, with 25 years’ experience working in all the UK’s major broadcast newsrooms. He now works on a range of journalism innovation and inclusion projects, including researching new forms of storytelling and helping build the People’s Newsroom Initiative at the Bureau of Investigative Journalism.
