Here are the things I read in writing the script: "Your Fave Is Selling You a Pedophilic Fantasy" [https://jadehurley.substack.com/p/your-fave-is-selling-a-pedophilic] by Jade Hurley: the viral essay that had me scratching my head and asking, "wait, what?" “Stuart Hall and the Rise of Cultural Studies [https://www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/stuart-hall-and-the-rise-of-cultural-studies]” The Prison Diaries - Gramsci. Popular Culture and The Turn To Gramsci - Tony Bennet (not *that* Tony Bennet) key stuff I watched and yapped abt: Brett Cooper’s Sabrina episode. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZAt54CiUGg&t=1244s] Kat Blaque offering nuance. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmv92l3AfIA&t=1s] The infamous Lolita images, which, call me crazy, but I feel like you’re telling on yourself if you immediately see the image of an adult woman and think of one scene in Lolita. Similarities do not pedo-bait a person make. It’s worth looking at the full spread at W [https://www.wmagazine.com/culture/sabrina-carpenter-cover-interview-2024]. The context, I think, sheds light on this being framed as a “Lolita” shoot. Hint: context makes it look like a weird zoom in. The image that launched a thousand hot (shitty) takes: Amid the backlash, she released an alt cover that she says is “approved by god”. I appreciate that she didn’t apologize and just subtly rolled her eyes at the whole discourse. Don’t you love it when a backlash sanitizes art? This podcast is also approved by god, so you should obviously subscribe and not be a heathen.
