He has recently also been coordinating the School's Executive Education portfolio. Martin’s career in higher education has involved him in academic management and leadership, postgraduate course development and management, quality assurance systems, teaching, research and consultancy. He is a member of the British Academy of Management (BAM), the British Universities Industrial Relations Association (BUIRA), the Association of University Administrators (AUA) and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA), the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). He has held appointments as external examiner at a number of universities in the UK and is a member of the CIPD’s Educational Quality Management Panel. He has held the positions of Chair and Vice Chair of the Mid Scotland Branch of the CIPD and is currently a member of the Branch Committee.  His teaching interests include human resource management, industrial relations and management development. He has worked closely with colleagues in several universities on a number of HR-related projects and has published in both academic and professional journals. Recent projects have concerned: staff attitudes and perceptions in the health sector; future skill development and partnership working among European employers and trade unions; and, attitudes to leadership among public sector managers.
