Episode 006: Heavy Metal Top 10 Part 2

There are probably a bunch of bands that, if you are a fan, you are thinking why didn’t these guys make it. Well the reason is twofold. 1. The title of the show constrains me to ten bands and in truth their are a lot more than 10 great metal bands and 2. It’s my list so I can do what I want. And this is a good point to say that I have always favored slightly more melody in my metal. I was never into speed, noise and distortion just for the sake of it. The best metal bands were great writers just the same as any other genre – it’s easy to write a good riff – just chugging on the E can achieve that – but constructing a melody and a song around it is less easy. But I do encourage you to message me with your favorite metal tunes. It’s very possible that I’ve miss ed one. So here’s a short run down of bands that deserve an honorable mention - Anthrax, Slipknot, Megadeth, Morbid Angel, Suicidal Tendencies, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Biohazard, and Lamb of God, to name but a few. So the next band stands out from the rest because it created something truly new for it’s time.

Episode 005: Heavy Metal Top 10 Part 1

This episode is all about old school heavy metal. It’s the Hogtown top ten Heavy Metal songs of all time. [Tops of the Pops theme / vinyl scratch / metal] I was inspired to put this show together because in my book Hogtown - the namesake of this very podcast series – I included a similar list, born out two metal fans arguing about what songs would actually make the cut if it were to be memorialized forever – and because more importantly I have been a dedicated metal fan for many years and my musical heart will always lie with balls to the wall riffage.

Episode 004: Rock and Roll

This episode is all about music of the 1950’s - more specifically the birth of rock and roll - the decade when rock stars were born, when the back beat ruled and when sex was used to sell records. It was the decade when the music industry - as we had known it until the digital revolution - came to be. It was the decade of the single - seven inches of pressed vinyl containing two songs and lasting less than six minutes in total had a huge impact on the direction of popular culture for the next half century or more.

Episode 003: Whiplash

This episode is inspired by the film Whiplash - the fictional story of a student at a New York music conservatory who is driven to the brink of insanity by his teacher in the pursuit of perfection. The movie stars Miles Teller as Andrew, as the student and JK Simmons as Fletcher his brutal and bullying professor, it came out in 2014, and was written and directed by Damien Chazelle. I loved this movie. On one level it’s simply a great story full of drama, tension and good music but what really struck me was the central question that it attempts to address, a question that we are very interested in at the Hogtown Music Podcast.
