Descripción

In Ireland, women have gained unprecedented rights in recent decades, but progress doesn’t always mean equality. In this episode of the In Her View Podcast, I’m joined by the brilliant Aoife Barry, journalist, author of Social Capital and weekly arts columnist for The Sunday Times. We talk about the real state of gender equality in Ireland today - from politics and power to parenting, representation and cultural life. We reflect on how far the country has come, what continues to hold it back and why hard-won rights should never be taken for granted.

7. Caelainn Hogan: Unburying the Past

Last July, the full forensic excavation of a mass baby grave at the former Mother and Baby Home in Tuam began - an effort to identify the remains of almost 800 children and rescue them from anonymity and oblivion. In this episode, I speak with journalist and author Caelainn Hogan (Republic of Shame, 2019) about the lasting legacies of Ireland’s institutions for “fallen women,” run by Church and State until recent decades. We also talk about the transgenerational trauma of Ireland’s colonial past - and the parallels it draws with Palestine, which is living through “a Bloody Sunday almost every day.” Finally, we explore the rise of far-right movements worldwide and how minorities are being weaponised to deepen existing inequalities.
