AMA: Why Does My Weak Core Cause Low Back & Sciatica Pain ❓(Part 1) -Ep.19

In this episode of Ask Me Anything I got a question from Mel in North Carolina that has been dealing with a low back injury and sciatica pain... "I just turned 34 a few weeks ago and have been dealing with low back and sciatica pain for going on 2 years now. I originally injured it 2 years ago doing some heavy deadlifts at Crossfit. I had an MRI about a year ago that came back relatively normal, with some minor disc bulges, but no nerves getting pinched. I have had 2 epidural shots that might have given me relief for about a week at most. I was seeing a Chiropractor 2 times a week for adjustments, but after 3 months it wasn't getting any better so I stopped going. I saw a total of 4 Physical Therapists. The first 2 were in-person and the other 2 were coaching me online. All of them told me my pain was coming from my core being weak and the goal would be to strengthen that and the back pain would get better. The Orthopedic said the same thing and that nothing on my MRI explained all the pain I was having. I have been religiously strengthening my core, but it always makes my back hurt more. Is it just something I need to work through to get better? Is there something else causing all the pain? Is all this pain simply just my core being weak? I just want to know what is going on and start feeling better because being in pain daily does suck the energy out of me. AMA: Should I Have Surgery For A Partially Torn Rotator Cuff❓ - Ep 17

In this episode of Ask Me Anything I got a great question from Alicia in New York that is dealing with a rotator cuff injury to the shoulder… “ I listened to your last episode on whether or not you should still get an MRI if an X-ray is clean. I hurt my shoulder, with no real direct trauma or accident, that seemed to have come out of nowhere one day when I reached for something high up in my cupboard.  I started at my primary doctor, had 2 rounds of anti-inflammatories, 2 injections, and about 8 weeks of Physical Therapy which did a lot of nothing. Finally, I was then “qualified” to get an MRI done. The results came back with a 75 percent partial tear of the supraspinatus tendon, tendinosis of the Infraspinatus tendon, and bursitis. I was referred to an orthopedic surgeon and told I was a candidate for rotator cuff repair as I “failed” all other treatments. I am only 38 years old with this and tired of dealing with all the shoulder pain but have been doing my research on these types of surgeries and how they have poor long-term outcomes. My question for you is if you think the surgery would be a good option to fix it. If not, then what else would you recommend?” In this episode, I do my best to give a different perspective on what is going on in this situation.
