Joshua
This Sunday we will be in chapter 22, and we'll be considering the seriousness of true worship. The next chapter (23) will accordingly have some instructions concerning worship, while the last chapter (24) will describe God's people holding a worship service. If you have not been already doing so, please try to read along with us in these books we are preaching through—read these passages beforehand, take time to reflect on them, and come to worship with them in mind. This will accomplish a few things, but two things in particular come to mind. First, you will learn so much more from the passage if you have spent time in it during the week (as opposed to encountering it afresh on Sunday morning). Second, your children will benefit from seeing their parents engaged in the teaching and application of God's Word. You'll talk about it, you'll see applications in your own homes and lives, and you'll speak with your children about it. Think of this as a sort of "memorial" you can raise when your excitement for the things of the Lord is contagious to your children. There are many themes that pop up in our passage for this Sunday, but one of them that is quite interesting to me comes in verse 17, when the people exclaim "have we not had enough?" I absolutely love this exclamation—when God's people are so tired of sin and its consequences, that when it appears their brethren are trespassing God's instructions, they fling their hands in the air and cry out "have we not learned our lesson? Have we not had enough of this cycle of disobedience?" This is a good attitude for God's people to have: we know what disobedience to God is, we know what it brings, and we know the consequences.
