What Do We Gain? | Edward | Ecclesiastes 1:4-11

Qohelet continues his search for meaning by asking a confronting question: "What does man gain by all the toil at which he toils under the sun?" (Ecclesiastes 1:3). In verses 4-11, he observes the world around him. Generations come and go, yet the earth remains. The sun rises and sets, the wind blows in endless circuits, and rivers flow continually into the sea without ever filling it. Nature moves in repeating cycles, and human life often feels much the same. Despite our efforts to achieve, build, accumulate, and leave a legacy, time marches on and even our memories fade. Qohelet is not denying that work, achievement, or life itself have value; rather, he is exposing the limits of what they can ultimately provide. If we seek lasting gain, significance, or permanence solely in the things of this world, we will be disappointed. The passage invites us to consider where true and lasting gain can be found.

Buying a Building? | Steve Morrison | 1 Chronicles 29:1-9

As preparations are made for the building of the temple, David calls the people of God not simply to give, but to consecrate themselves to the Lord. In verse 5, the invitation comes: “Who then is willing to consecrate himself today to the Lord?” Giving becomes an act of worship, surrender, and wholehearted devotion. And in verse 9, the people respond with joy, generosity, and willing hearts. As King’s Church looks ahead with faith toward one day purchasing a building of our own, this passage encourages us to offer ourselves freely to God - trusting Him, worshipping Him, and participating together in what He is building among us.

In James 4:6, we are reminded of a striking contrast: “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” This short verse reveals something essential about God’s character and how He relates to us. Pride places us in opposition to God, as it elevates self above Him and others. Humility, on the other hand, positions us to receive His grace - His undeserved favour, help, and presence. This passage invites us to examine our posture before God and challenges us to walk in humility so that we can live in the fullness of His grace.

The Ten Lepers | Andy Farrer | Luke 17:11-19

In Luke 17:11-19, Jesus encounters ten men suffering from leprosy who cry out for mercy. He tells them to go and show themselves to the priests, and as they go, they are cleansed. Yet only one - a Samaritan - returns to thank Jesus, praising God loudly and falling at His feet. Jesus notes the absence of the other nine and tells the grateful man that his faith has made him well. This passage highlights not only Jesus’ power to heal, but also the importance of gratitude, faith, and recognising God’s work in our lives.
