Lazy, Messy, Weird
Getting an ADHD or Autism diagnosis in the UK is complicated. NHS waiting lists can be seven years long. Some areas aren't even accepting referrals. Right to Choose exists but GPs don't always understand it. Private assessment is fast but expensive and can cause problems with medication. In this episode, I walk you through your options, what to expect, and why you don't actually need a diagnosis to start getting support. Episode Length: 18 minutes In This Episode: The three routes to diagnosis in the UK are NHS, Right to Choose, and private assessment. The NHS route means asking your GP to refer you to your local ADHD and Autism service. Many GPs don't understand neurodivergence and might dismiss you. Waiting lists are 18 months to seven years. Some areas have paused new referrals entirely. There's no support while you wait. Right to Choose lets you choose an NHS subcontracted provider if your local service can't meet your needs. Waiting times are usually three to six months instead of years. But not all GPs understand it and some ICBs have stopped accepting these referrals. You need to self-advocate. Private assessment is fastest. Most providers see you within weeks or months. Cost is £500 to £2,000. The advantage is choice. The disadvantage is that if you want ADHD medication, most GPs won't agree to shared care after private diagnosis. The assessment process involves long questionnaires about current experiences and childhood, collateral information from someone who knew you as a child, and one to three hours of appointments with a specialist. I share how to prepare, what evidence you need, and what to expect. You don't need a diagnosis to access reasonable adjustments at work under the Equality Act 2010. You just need to demonstrate impact. The same applies to Access to Work funding. Many of my coaching clients get funding while still on waiting lists. Self-diagnosis is valid. Diagnosis is gatekept. Waiting lists are years long. Criteria were written for young white boys. Clinicians dismiss adult, female, and minoritised presentations. If understanding yourself through this lens makes your life make sense, you don't need a psychiatrist's permission. Diagnosis is a tool. For some it's essential. For others it's not worth the time, money, or energy. You decide what's right for you. If you pursue it, know it can be both painful and validating at the same time.
