Matt Talks Hemp
This week Matt interviews Chelli Stanley, founder of Upland Grassroots. Chelli is working alongside members of the Mi’kmaq tribe and researchers to see if hemp can play a role in remediating the contaminated soil and water at the former Loring Air Force Base in northern Maine. This land is contaminated with PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals” that were present in fire fighting foam used in training exercises on the base. These chemicals are also found in many products that are used on a daily basis by the majority of people in the US. Research around these chemicals, and their impact on the human body and our environment, is still nascent, but hemp seems to be a promising solution for cleaning up contaminated land. They discuss the history of Loring Air Force Base, the widespread PFAS pollution that has recently been discovered in Maine, some of the challenges Chelli has had at Loring, and her advice for people who might want to start a remediation project of their own.
