Ōtepoti powerhouse Pearly* on their debut album 'Not So Sweet'.

Pearly* have all the qualities you associate with guitar music being made in the deep south - and more. Yes, their music radiates an effortless ‘cooler than you’ charm. Yes, its some of the best guitar music being made in the world right now. Yes, theres a tightrope dance between sincerity and sarcasm. These are the things Ōtepoti Dunedin has been excelling in for ages. Pearly* have all that in bucketloads and more. They’re restless both musically and physically - following up their debut EP with a debut album in good time, playing some of their first shows outside of Dunedin, and impressing new audiences consistently. All the while securing plaudits from the industry at a level that can be difficult for Ōtepoti bands to achieve. I caught up with Joel (Guitar, Vocals) and Phaedra (Bass, Vocals) pre-soundcheck at Space Academy (Ōtautahi Christchurch) to talk about the formation of the band, the new album ‘Not So Sweet’ and the origin of the 90’s aesthetics of the band. As any regular person does I have a sneaky look at the guitar pedals of bands as they setup. You often see reoccurring favourites - the Boss Digital Delays, a ProcCo Rats, Big Muffs etc. At a recent Space Academy show my routine checkout revealed one of the most unique and beautiful collections of pedals Id ever seen - wooden pedals with big knobs and rounded edges filled the board. Turns out that was the personal board of Ryan Nicol, that night playing in Ōtautahi band HOIHOI and his pedal board consisted almost of pedals he’d built entirely himself. You’ll also spot his pedals on the board of Aotearoa guitar icon Andrew Wilson of Die! Die! Die! and anyone else who was lucky enough to get their hands on his seriously small runs. In this interview we discuss all things pedals and noise, the intersections of creativity and practicality, and why everyone who grows up on a farm loves metal.
