Parts are now controlled by the rebel group M23, and as a result, UN agencies say they are struggling to access vulnerable communities. To help us understand the geopolitical forces at work and the unfolding humanitarian crisis on the ground, On Her Record speaks to Bazeli Mbo, President and Co-Founder of Team Congo. Afghanistan

Mariam Solaimankhil was born in the United States to Afghan parents who had sought political asylum. She first visited Afghanistan in 2010, and what was meant to be a short trip quickly became a homecoming. Over the next decade, Mariam dedicated herself to public service and eventually entered politics as an MP. In 2021, just days before Kabul fell to the Taliban, she was warned that they would kill her if she stayed. She says she never comprehended leaving Afghanistan in the way she did- and is now based in California, where she continues her work as part of Afghanistan’s government in exile. In this episode, Mariam speaks for the first time about the personal experiences that led her into politics and addresses the Taliban’s ongoing erosion of women’s and human rights in Afghanistan. ++ Host/Producer: Sara Gill Audio Edit: Muhammad Ali Khan++

Sudan

Our third episode focuses on Sudan. The UN says that more than two and a half years of fighting has resulted in the world's largest humanitarian crisis with 25 million people facing acute starvation and one in three children suffering from malnutrition. To help us understand what started this conflict that is often called a counter-revolutionary war, and why a ceasefire has been so hard to achieve, we hear from Dallia Abdelmoniem. She is a former journalist turned baker turned political commentator, who, like millions of others, fled Sudan in April 2023. (A small note on production, this episode was recorded on September 3, 2025. There are small technical issues with our mics and we apologise for any listening inconveniences caused). ++ Host/Producer: Sara Gill Producer: Iman Anah Audio Edit: Muhammad Ali Khan ++
