2 Samuel, Week 16 Day 3: Taking Ownership of Our Choices Devotional One of the most dangerous lies you can tell yourself is that sin just “happened” to you. We talk like we are victims of circumstances outside our control, but Scripture will not let us off the hook. You make choices, and you are responsible for the choices you make. Period. Amnon did not stumble into sin by accident. He made deliberate decisions, and those decisions wrecked lives. Yet how often do you hear someone say, “I don’t know how this happened,” once they are staring at the wreckage of their own sin? That victim mentality is a wall. It stands between you and real repentance, and it shuts down any chance of growth. Freedom starts with honesty. Own your decisions. Own your responsibility. Yes, temptation is real, but you choose how you respond to it. Yes, you have a sinful nature, but you decide whether to feed it or fight it. The moment you stop making excuses and start taking ownership is the moment you put yourself in a position to receive God’s grace and actually change. Bible Verse “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” — Jeremiah 17:9 (ESV) Reflection Question What area of your life do you need to stop making excuses for and start taking full responsibility? Quote “You make choices. You did it. Don’t pretend that some outside force came into your life and you just woke up in lustful sin. Own it. You did it.” Prayer Lord, make me honest about my choices and give me the courage to take full responsibility for them. Help me own my sin and come to You for forgiveness.

For Amnon, that voice was his friend Jonadab, who handed him crafty counsel that led straight to disaster. Take the lesson: not every piece of advice you get is godly, and a lot of it is flat-out from the enemy. The world has plenty of voices telling you that your happiness is what matters most, that you deserve to follow your heart, that you should chase whatever feels good. But Scripture is blunt about it—wisdom that leads you into sin is not from God. It is demonic. A real friend, a real counselor, will never push you deeper into temptation or talk you out of your integrity. So be discerning about whose voice gets a hearing. Godly counsel points you toward righteousness even when righteousness is hard. It reminds you of God’s standard and helps you run from temptation instead of rationalizing it. When someone is coaching you toward a path that contradicts Scripture, that is your cue to go find different counsel. Bible Verse “This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.” — James 3:15 (ESV) Reflection Question Who are the voices of influence in your life, and are they pointing you toward or away from God’s truth? Quote “Any wisdom that leads you into sin is not from God. Any wisdom that leads you away from God is from the devil.” Prayer Father, give me the discernment to spot ungodly counsel for what it is, and surround me with wise people who will point me toward Your ways.

2 Samuel, Week 16 Day 1: When Love Becomes a Lie Devotional Our culture loves to slap the word love onto things that are nothing but lust, but Scripture refuses to play that game. Love wants the good of another person. Lust wants to consume that person and move on. You see it laid bare in Amnon’s story in 2 Samuel 13. What he called love was destructive desire, and it ended up destroying both him and his sister Tamar. Lust is a liar, and it is good at the job. It tells you your desires are pure when they are nothing but selfish. It promises you everything and hands you emptiness. Real love does the opposite. It protects. It serves. It puts the other person’s good ahead of your own comfort and your own pleasure, every single time. Here is the good news: you do not have to be fooled. God’s Word draws the line between love and lust clearly, and it does not leave you guessing. When you anchor your heart in His truth instead of trusting your feelings, you can tell the difference and you can choose the path that honors God and honors the people around you. Bible Verse “But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.” — James 1:14–15 (ESV) Reflection Question How can you tell the difference between genuine love and selfish desire in your own relationships? Quote “Lust always begins with deception. Lust will call it self love.” Prayer Lord, give me eyes to see the difference between love and lust for what it is. Give me the wisdom to follow Your truth instead of my own deceptive heart.

Direction, Week 6 Day 5: Living the Mission Devotional Village Church’s mission is to help as many people as possible become fully devoted followers of Jesus. This isn’t just a church slogan — it’s the heartbeat of every believer. You cannot accomplish the mission for which God redeemed you without living to see others saved through your engagement. This means we must engage a culture that needs to turn from sin and trust the gospel. Love demands that we speak truth, even when it’s hard to hear. Biblical orthodoxy without compassion is ugly, but the answer to cultural compromise isn’t to soften the truth — it’s to speak it with greater love. We walk through the world looking for opportunities to explain the hope of the gospel to people desperate to hear it. Every conversation, every relationship, every interaction is a potential gospel opportunity. The question isn’t whether you’re called to engage culture — you are. The question is whether you’ll trust God to direct the process and give you the words to say. Bible Verse “But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,” — Matthew 5:44 (ESV) Reflection Question What specific step will you take this week to engage someone in your life with the hope of the gospel? Quote “We need to engage a culture that needs to turn from sin, that needs to trust the gospel. Let’s live like it for all the world to see.” Prayer Father, use me as Your instrument to reach others with the gospel. Give me boldness to engage and wisdom to love well.

Direction, Week 6 Day 4: Seeing the Harvest Devotional Jesus looked at the crowds and saw something His disciples missed — a harvest ready to be gathered. While others saw problems, opposition, and difficulty, Jesus saw opportunity. We live in what many call a ‘negative world’ where Christianity is increasingly viewed unfavorably. But have we forgotten that we’ve already won? The same Jesus who conquered death is still building His church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it. That hostile coworker is someone God may yet save. That angry online opponent is someone for whom Christ died. The harvest opportunities are already placed in your life — you don’t even need to look for them. God has strategically positioned you where you are for such a time as this. Instead of cultural pessimism, we need biblical optimism. Yes, the world is broken and hostile to truth, but God specializes in transforming hearts that seem impossible to reach. Bible Verse “Jesus said to them, ‘My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work. Do you not say, “There are yet four months, then comes the harvest”? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest.’” — John 4:34–35 (ESV) Reflection Question Who in your life seems most resistant to the gospel, and how might God be preparing their heart in ways you cannot see? Quote “Jesus sees all the negativity and he says, I’ve got them right where I want them. The harvest is plentiful.” Prayer Jesus, open my eyes to see the harvest opportunities around me. Give me hope and expectation that You are working in hearts I think are unreachable.
