In This podcast, Dr. Heidi Abraham discusses District 7's Operational K9 Medical Program and the impact it has for preventing unnecessary harm and further disability to injured Operational K9s with the Bexar County Sheriffs Office K9 unit. We are joined by the Texas Operational Canine Care Committee co-chairs Dr. Jeannie Clark, DVM and Rick Maricle, NRP, FP-C on this episode. The discussion details how to start an OpK9 medical program at your department by identifying needs and coordinating with appropriate Veterinarian oversight. Dr. Craig Manifold has a discussion regarding transport to patients to freestanding emergency rooms.

Dr Manifold and Chief Clarkson discuss two recent cases and how the medic’s interactions influenced the decisions and impacted the care provided to our patients. We don’t’ expect every patient to transported to the hospital but there are obvious scenes where you know the patients need to be assessed and transported. Asking the patient , “Do you want to go to the hospital?” may not be the best question to ask.
