Week 1 – Induction & Diagnostic Assessment Hi, it’s Sarah, and welcome to your Illumin8 podcast. This week, we’re getting started with Level 1 Functional Skills Reading. You’ll be reading real-world texts like emails, adverts, and articles. To begin, you’ll do a diagnostic assessment — not a test, but a way to see your strengths and where you can grow. Ask yourself: 1. What am I already confident with? 2. What areas do I want to improve — like vocabulary or finding key information? Remember, this journey is about progress. You’ve already taken the first step. Keep practising, stay curious, and you’re on your way!

Level 2 - Week 1 - English Induction & Diagnostic Assessment

Week 1 – Induction & Diagnostic Assessment  Hi, it’s Sarah, and welcome to your Illumin8 Podcast. This week we're starting your Level 2 Reading journey — where you go beyond understanding texts and begin analysing them for impact. You’ll be reading real-world materials like reports and articles, and learning to: * Analyse how language and structure influence readers * Compare how different texts present ideas * Interpret meaning beneath the surface Your first step is a diagnostic assessment — not a test, but a helpful snapshot of your current skills. Be honest, take your time, and afterward, reflect on: 1. What am I already confident with? 2. What do I find challenging? This is your foundation week. Look closely at texts around you and ask: Why did the writer use this word or this structure? How do they want me to react? Remember — knowing your starting point is the first step toward success. Keep practising, stay curious, and you’ve already made a brilliant start.

Entry 3 - Week 1 - Reading for Main Ideas and Details.

Week 1 – Reading for Main Ideas and Details Hi, it’s Sarah, and welcome to your Illumin8 podcast. This week we're learning how to spot the main idea and supporting details in a text. Every article, message, or post has one key message — that’s the main idea. The writer then uses extra information — the details — to explain or support that idea. For example, in a text about sleep, the main idea might be “Sleep is important for your health,” while the details explain why — like repairing your body and improving concentration. To practise, ask yourself: 1. What is this really about? 2. Which details support that idea? Try this with anything you read this week. Spot the main idea, and then pick one or two key details. It’s a simple habit that builds understanding and confidence. Thanks for listening — keep practising and stay curious!
