Radio Against Repression
With the removal of Ari, a statue commemorating the sexual slavery of over 200.000 women at the hands of the Japanese military during WWII, Berlin once again enacts political censorship through the arts. In 1992, the Korean Council for Women Drafted for Military Sexual Slavery by Japan, began weekly Wednesday protests and to commemorate the 1000th protest, a public statue known as The Statue of Peace was installed opposite the Japanese embassy in Seoul. Ari, a sister to that statue, is a sculpture of a young woman created by the Korean artists Kim Seo-kyung and Kim Eun-sung located in the Berlin district of Moabit, until 18th of October 2025. The campaign in Germany seeks to put pressure on the Japanese government for acknowledgement and reparation while also drawing attention to the politicians in Germany that have pushed for her removal - Stefanie Remlinger (Green Party), and former Berlin mayor Kai Wegner to name but two. We chart the history of this powerful movement, the relevance of its goals and strategies for contemporary Germany and the attempts of multiple politicians to relativize the specific crimes of the Japanese army in a manner that attempts to obscure the established pipeline between sexual abuse, anti-democratic efforts and the billionaire class.
