She had planned a sleepover with a friend in Paimio but canceled it to babysit her 3-year-old brother. Her parents were divorced, and her mother had moved out of the family home several years earlier.  That evening, while Piia was at home with her two brothers, aged 3 and 14, her father was in the sauna with his father-in-law. After Piia and her older brother argued over television programs, Piia left the house, likely carrying a small bag with some money.
