The only pyramid in Cambodia made from this material. Official history says it was built in 975 AD, struck by lightning, and abandoned unfinished. But after walking the site and examining the evidence, I believe this pyramid was completed — and served a far more sophisticated purpose. But the most intriguing monument sits just outside the city walls — a pyramid that for centuries appeared to be nothing more than a natural hill.    Then archaeologists excavated the mound in 2008 anddiscovered a massive stepped pyramid hidden beneath. Officially, the site is attributed to the little-known Dvaravati culture of the 6th–9th centuries AD. But its architecture, precision sculptures, and the strange artifacts raise seriousquestions.
