National Day of Awareness for MMIW: Hanna Harris
Today is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. In honor of this day, today’s episode is about just one of these missing and murdered women.
Hanna Harris was born on May 5, 1992 in Montana. She was raised in Lame Deer, MT on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. On July 3, 2013, Hannah left her 10 month old son in the care of her uncle while she went out with family and friends to the 4th of July Powwow. Her car was found abandoned on a dead end road early the next morning.
Without the help of police, her family was able to gather over 100 people to help search for Hanna. After five agonizing days, her body was discovered in a field near her car. Hanna’s killers were eventually arrested and prosecuted, but if the authorities would have stepped in and helped from the beginning, maybe one of her killers wouldn’t be free right now.
This is just one Indigenous woman’s story, but there are countless others. The statistics are staggering. If you want to help bring awareness to this epidemic, wear red today, share this episode, donate to or get involved with the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center at https://www.niwrc.org/ [https://www.niwrc.org/].
CONTENT WARNING: This episode contains discussions of sexual assault, violence, and homicide. Listener discretion is advised.
