Wagner is arguably the cleaner fit. Cincinnati's linebacker room remains one of the biggest question marks on the roster, especially after several offseason changes. Even at 36 years old, Wagner remains productive against the run and brings elite football intelligence, leadership, and communication skills. Recent analysis of the Bengals' roster has highlighted linebacker as an unfinished position group and specifically identified Wagner as a veteran who could immediately stabilize the defense. The biggest concern with Wagner is coverage ability. He is no longer the sideline-to-sideline defender he was during his prime with the Seahawks, and opposing offenses would likely target him in passing situations. Still, for a Bengals defense looking to improve consistency and leadership, Wagner could be a valuable short-term answer while younger linebackers continue developing. The recent restructuring of Joe Burrow's contract reportedly created additional cap flexibility, making a move more feasible than it was earlier this offseason. Bosa presents a different type of gamble. The former Ohio State star has long been connected to Cincinnati because of his relationship with Burrow and the Bengals' desire to improve their pass rush. Several Bengals-focused outlets have continued to mention Bosa as a logical target throughout the offseason. The upside is obvious. When healthy, Bosa can still affect games as a pass rusher and would give defensive coordinator Al Golden another experienced edge presence. The concern, however, is durability. Injuries have become a recurring theme in Bosa's career, making it difficult to project him as a full-season contributor. If Cincinnati signs only one of the two, Wagner feels like the more realistic and immediate need. But if the Bengals believe they are one pass rusher away from making a deep playoff run, Bosa remains the higher-upside swing as training camp approaches. Then, in a matter of innings, it slipped away. Wednesday’s 5-4 loss to the San Diego Padres was another painful example of a problem that has haunted Cincinnati throughout much of the season: an inability to finish games. The Reds carried a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the eighth after solo home runs from JJ Bleday and Eugenio Suárez helped build what looked like a comfortable advantage. Starter Brady Singer had done his job, allowing just two runs over six innings and putting the bullpen in position to secure the win. Instead, the bullpen faltered once again. San Diego chipped away in the eighth, getting RBI hits from Gavin Sheets and Samad Taylor to erase Cincinnati’s lead and tie the game at 4-4. What had been a promising afternoon suddenly became another tense finish for a Reds team that has struggled to lock down late leads. The decisive blow came in the ninth. With two outs and nobody on, recently recalled right-hander Chase Petty appeared one pitch away from sending the game to extra innings. Instead, he left a breaking ball over the plate, and Fernando Tatis Jr. crushed it just over the left-field wall for a walk-off home run. Petco Park erupted as the Padres completed their comeback and secured the series victory. For the Reds, the loss was especially frustrating because the offense did enough to win. Cincinnati collected 10 hits, hit three home runs, and received quality pitching from Singer. Yet they managed just one hit in six opportunities with runners in scoring position, leaving the door open for San Diego’s rally. The result dropped Cincinnati to 32-35 and continued a rough stretch in which late-game execution has repeatedly undermined otherwise solid performances. When a team gets three homers and a quality start, it expects to win. The Reds got neither the win nor the series, thanks to one swing from Tatis that turned a likely victory into another gut-punch defeat. The biggest reason is simple: Garrett was a uniquely difficult matchup for Cincinnati. He recorded the record-setting 23rd sack of his 2025 season against Joe Burrow in the season finale and had become the one defender who could completely alter the Bengals' offensive game plan. Verse is an excellent young pass rusher, but he's not Garrett. Garrett was coming off a Defensive Player of the Year season and an NFL-record 23 sacks. Replacing that level of production is almost impossible, even with a player as talented as Verse. The trade also signals that Cleveland is thinking more about the future than maximizing its chances right now. Acquiring draft capital and a younger edge rusher aligns with a longer-term roster build, while the Rams clearly made the move to chase a championship immediately. That doesn't mean the Bengals should celebrate too much. The Browns didn't get fleeced. Verse is already a high-end young defender, and Cleveland added a first-round pick, a second-round pick, and a third-round pick. Several analysts have argued that Verse softens the loss considerably and fits the Browns' timeline better than a 30-year-old Garrett. So the Bengals' view is probably: Short term: huge win because Garrett is gone. Long term: less clear because Cleveland acquired a potential star in Verse and valuable draft assets. If you're a Bengals fan, the best part isn't that the Browns got worse overall—it's that you no longer have to face Myles Garrett twice a year. That's a meaningful change in the AFC North.
