Summa Made Simple
In this episode of Summa Made Simple, we explore one of the most challenging and frequently misunderstood questions in the Summa Theologiae: Is virginity more excellent than marriage? Drawing on Scripture, the Church Fathers, and the reasoning of St. Thomas Aquinas, we examine why the Church has traditionally regarded consecrated virginity as a higher state of life while at the same time affirming the profound goodness and dignity of marriage. Along the way, Aquinas offers a series of powerful principles that reach far beyond the question of celibacy. What makes a spiritual good greater than a bodily good? Why is the contemplative life considered higher than the active life? How can a married person surpass a virgin in holiness? And when does the common good take precedence over the good of the individual? Far from pitting marriage against virginity, this episode reveals how both vocations are ordered toward the same ultimate end: union with God. The real question is not which state looks more impressive, but which choices best direct a person toward the contemplation of divine things.
