Talking Early Years
Welcome back to another episode of our Safeguarding Shorts side series, where we unpack key safeguarding topics and explore their relevance in everyday practice. In this episode, we’re exploring the serious and sensitive issue of breast ironing, a harmful practice that can affect children and young people. We take time to understand what breast ironing is, why it happens, and the impact it can have on a child’s physical and emotional wellbeing. Together, we unpack the cultural and contextual factors that can surround this practice, recognising the importance of approaching the topic with sensitivity, respect, and without judgement. We discuss how breast ironing sits within safeguarding frameworks as a form of abuse, and the responsibilities of professionals in identifying and responding to concerns. We explore how this issue may present in practice, including potential signs and indicators, and the importance of professional curiosity when something doesn’t feel right. The conversation also highlights the need to look beyond assumptions, ensuring that the voice and lived experience of the child remains central at all times. Throughout the episode, we reflect on the importance of multi-agency working, information sharing, and early intervention in protecting children from harm. We also consider how practitioners can build trust with families and communities while maintaining a clear focus on safeguarding responsibilities. As always, we emphasise the importance of respectful challenge, cultural awareness, and keeping the child at the centre of all decision making. This Safeguarding Short offers space for reflection, increased awareness, and practical insight into responding to less commonly discussed safeguarding concerns in everyday practice.
