Te Whē - Szn 2
In this episode of the Te Whē, our host Hāmi is joined by the newly appointed Executive Director of Auckland Pride, Julia Croft, and Nathan Joe, Creative Director of Auckland Pride. Julia, a celebrated performance artist, reflects on her journey from studying acting to breaking the mould in her live performance personal work, which led to creating F.O.L.A (Festival of Live Art) with her bestie Nisha Madhan. She emphasises the importance of providing support and resources for independent artists and creating a context that values experimental art. Nathan, a masterful playwright and spoken word artist, shares his creative inspirations and reflects on this year's first Pride Elevates programming. Julia and Nathan express their excitement about their desire to bring a creative approach to shaping Auckland Pride. They discuss the fluidity of roles within the organisation and their intention to build a community that nurtures and uplifts artists. They also highlight the importance of social practice and participatory art in connecting with the zeitgeist and promoting equity. The threesome envisions a future for Auckland Pride that disrupts traditional structures, embraces diversity, and creates a decentralised and organic festival experience - perhaps one that resembles a jellyfish or a forest-like digital ecosystem (we get lost in colourful analogies). They emphasise the power of art and culture in activating the community and providing platforms to come together and celebrate being queer.
