6 Love in Deed and in Truth - Part 2 (1 John 3:18-24)
John is helping believers to prepare for the inevitable season of doubt where there is a struggle with assurance of salvation. The struggles can come when the Spirit convicts us that we aren’t loving perfectly or that we are managing sin instead of fighting it.
5 Love in Deed and in Truth (1 John 3:10-17)
The gospel does not merely offer forgiveness to sinners. The gospel transforms them in to people who love one another.
4 Abide in Him (1 John 2:18-3:10)
3 A New Loyalty, A New Love (1 John 2:7-17)
And by way of summary of the entire letter, what is it in a counterfeit Christian that is illuminated by the Light according to the entire letter of 1 John? Failure. 1. A failure to acknowledge and agree with God about their sin (confess) 2. A failure to remain in fellowship with God and His people leading to rejection of the truth about Jesus the Messiah 3. A failure to grow in righteousness by continually practicing lawlessness 4. A failure to grow in love for the brothers and sisters in Christ 5. A failure to grow in rejecting the loves of the world and its characteristic sin The last two will be in focus this morning as we walk through 1 John 2:7-17 which has the main idea: Prove genuine through growth in love for God’s eternal people and in rejection for the love of the temporal world.
2 Walk in the Light (1 John 1:5-2:6)
We continue our series in 1 John by looking at 1 John 1:5–2:6. In this passage, John reminds us that God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. That truth exposes both our sin and our need, but it also leads us to the hope of the gospel: when we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us through Jesus Christ our Advocate. Join us as we consider what it means to walk in the light, live honestly before God, and rest in the finished work of Christ.
