Halim Flowers [https://www.instagram.com/halimflowers/?hl=en] is an author, poet, artist and prison reform activist from Washington, DC. At age 16, he was charged as an adult for being an accomplice to a felony murder and sentenced to a term of 40 years to life in prison. While incarcerated, he discovered his love for literature and the arts, and began to write poetry. After serving 22 years behind bars he was released, using his influence to help enact the Incarceration Reduction Amendment Act. He is now a prolific artist, with works shown across the country in some of the world's most prestigious galleries, alongside Warhol, Basquiat and more. He currently uses his newfound notoriety to help those currently or formerly incarcerated by pushing for criminal justice reform. In this episode, Cari and Halim talk about the environment that led to his prison sentence, how he used that time to become a successful poet and author, and hi adjustment to life outside of prison – from learning to paint to eventually showing his works some of the world's most prestigious art galleries. She is a member of the United States women's national artistic gymnastics team with whom she won a Silver medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics.
